JACMEL, St Lucia — A 10 Year Old Student Dies After Medical Emergency on Thursday after collapsing during a physical education class at a primary school, prompting concerns from her family about how the emergency was handled.
The child has been identified by relatives as Amelia Isidore of Bois D’Inde, Jacmel. Family members said Amelia collapsed while participating in PE activities and had a known history of seizures.
According to the family’s account, the child was not transported directly to hospital following her collapse. Relatives said she was instead taken to the Jacmel health centre, where they believe critical emergency medical intervention was delayed.
Timeline of events after the medical emergency
Family members said distress calls were placed to emergency services requesting an ambulance, but they claim there was an extended wait before transportation became available. During that period, relatives said Amelia’s condition deteriorated while she remained at the health facility.
The family expressed concern that immediate life-saving measures, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation, were not administered as the child’s condition worsened. They questioned whether health aides on duty were adequately trained to respond to a critical pediatric emergency. These claims reflect the family’s account and have not been independently verified.
Relatives also raised concerns that no teacher or school official accompanied the child during the medical emergency. They questioned whether a direct transfer to hospital, rather than an initial stop at a health centre, might have resulted in a different outcome.
Amelia later died. No official determination has been released regarding the precise medical cause of death.
The incident comes amid broader concerns about capacity and response within the public health system, which have been examined in previous reporting on Saint Lucia’s healthcare challenges.
No official cause of death released as review pending
Authorities have not yet provided details on the medical findings or whether an internal review of the emergency response will be conducted. Standard procedures are typically followed in cases involving sudden or unexpected deaths, including medical and administrative assessments.
Officials have also not indicated whether school emergency protocols or response timelines will be examined. Further information is expected as authorities complete their assessments.
