ABLP and UPP Candidates Face Off in St Peter By-Election Showdown, Sparking Heated Political Debates

Antigua and Barbuda’s political scene is abuzz as preparations intensify for the St Peter By-Election Showdown, set for January 14, 2025. The by-election was called following the passing of longtime St Peter Member of Parliament Asot Michael, leaving a significant vacancy in the constituency. The ruling Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP) and the opposition United Progressive Party (UPP) have confirmed their candidates, setting the stage for a high-stakes political battle.

The ABLP has officially named Senator Rawdon Turner as its candidate. Turner, an architect and builder known for his work on notable island properties, is no stranger to St Peter voters, having contested the constituency in the last general election. In a segment on Pointe FM’s Browne and Browne Show, Prime Minister Gaston Browne expressed confidence in Turner’s ability to represent St Peter effectively, praising his professional achievements and familiarity with the constituency.

“I think Turner is an excellent replacement,” Browne said. “He has the capacity and the vision needed to deliver for St Peter.” Browne also criticized the UPP, describing the party as disorganized and lacking direction. Despite his critiques, he acknowledged the importance of strong opposition in fostering good governance.

On the other side, the UPP officially announced George Wehner as its candidate in a press statement shared with the Antigua Observer. Wehner, who previously contested the St George seat in the 2018 general election, has since served as the UPP’s Mobilization Officer, using his social media platform to amplify criticisms of the Gaston Browne administration.

UPP Political Leader Jamale Pringle, quoted in the Antigua Observer, praised Wehner’s commitment to the party’s principles. “We have every confidence in Brother Wehner. His loyalty is unquestionable, his work ethic is unmatched, and his commitment to the principles of the party is undisputed,” Pringle stated. He also confirmed that the UPP is gearing up for an “all-out by-election campaign” with the support of the constituency branch.

Meanwhile, the Antigua and Barbuda Electoral Commission (ABEC) is ramping up efforts to ensure maximum voter participation. In an interview on Observer AM, Public Relations Officer Elisa Graham announced extended registration hours and Sunday operations to facilitate voter ID renewals ahead of the election. Graham reassured the public that the current ID renewal participation rate, reported at about 25 percent, was not a cause for concern.

With the Writ of Elections issued by Governor General Sir Rodney Williams, both the ABLP and UPP have intensified their campaigns. The ABLP, according to the Browne and Browne Show, is already hitting the ground running, while the UPP is mobilizing its base to challenge the ruling party.

The St Peter By-Election Showdown has drawn significant attention as it seeks to fill the vacancy left by the late MP Asot Michael. As reported by both the Antigua Observer and ABS Television and Radio, Turner and Wehner will go head-to-head, presenting voters with distinct visions for the constituency.

As the countdown to January 14 continues, all eyes are on this pivotal by-election to determine who will emerge victorious in one of Antigua and Barbuda’s most closely watched political contests in recent years.
