Allen Chastanet 2025 address highlights Saint Lucia achievements, critiques leadership, and calls for unity and progress.

Castries, Saint Lucia — Saint Lucia’s Opposition Leader Allen Chastanet delivered a stirring New Year’s address, reflecting on the island’s triumphs and challenges in 2024 while presenting his vision for a brighter future in 2025. The Allen Chastanet 2025 Address, titled “Hope Amidst Despair,” highlighted the nation’s achievements in sports, the arts, and governance, alongside critical evaluations of the government’s policies and leadership.

Celebrating National Triumphs in Sports and Beyond

Allen Chastanet began by applauding the stellar accomplishments of Saint Lucians who made history in 2024. Julien Alfred’s Olympic gold and silver medals were highlighted as groundbreaking achievements that inspired a generation of athletes. Rising stars like Naomi London and cricket talents Zaida James and Akeem Auguste, alongside chess champion Kaieem Elizee, were also recognized. Chastanet commended the Saint Lucia Kings for their first Caribbean Premier League (CPL) title, a moment of unity for the island.

“These successes underscore what Saint Lucians can achieve when given the right opportunities,” he said, attributing many achievements to initiatives introduced during his administration, such as the establishment of a Sports Academy and investments in youth infrastructure.

However, Allen Chastanet criticized the current government for redirecting $800,000 monthly from youth and sports development to loan repayments, which he argued stifles future opportunities for Saint Lucian athletes.

Criticizing Philip J Pierre Government Leadership and Broken Promises

The address turned sharply critical as Allen Chastanet lambasted the Saint Lucia Labour Party (SLP) for what he described as failed governance. He accused the administration of abandoning critical infrastructure projects, including the St Judes Hospital reconstruction, Hewanorra International Airport redevelopment, and housing initiatives.

“The decision to halt progress on these projects reflects a prioritization of politics over people,” Chastanet said, pointing to mounting costs and lost opportunities as evidence of mismanagement.

The healthcare system, according to Chastanet, is in crisis. He recounted a personal visit to the Owen King EU Hospital (OKEU), where he witnessed patients waiting in dire conditions. He criticized the government’s handling of the health sector, calling it a moral and governance failure.

The Shadow of Crime and Economic Struggles

Chastanet painted a grim picture of the country’s crime situation, citing a record number of homicides in 2024. He accused the government of ignoring the criminal elements within its own ranks and failing to provide effective solutions.

Economic hardships were another key focus, with Chastanet addressing soaring fuel prices, strained small businesses, and a struggling agricultural sector. He called for renewed investment in farmers and young entrepreneurs, emphasizing the need to make agriculture appealing through modernization and incentives.

“These issues have left many Saint Lucians feeling abandoned and hopeless,” he said, urging the government to prioritize citizens’ needs over partisan interests.

A Vision for 2025 and Beyond

Despite these criticisms, Chastanet offered a vision for a prosperous Saint Lucia. He outlined goals for a nation with zero murders, thriving families, accessible world-class education, and robust support for businesses and innovation. He also envisioned an economy bolstered by sustainable tourism and agriculture.

Chastanet called on Saint Lucians to stay engaged in democracy, emphasizing that accountability and civic participation are crucial to the nation’s progress. “Leadership is about service, not power,” he said, urging citizens to demand more from their government and themselves.

Preparing for Future Leadership

Looking ahead, Chastanet revealed plans to strengthen the United Workers Party (UWP) by focusing on candidate selection and refining policies to address Saint Lucia’s most pressing issues. He committed to fostering leadership that embodies integrity, vision, and a dedication to serving all citizens.

Chastanet concluded his address with a spiritual and motivational message, urging Saint Lucians to remain hopeful, united, and committed to building a better nation. “Together, we can make Saint Lucia a beacon of hope, opportunity, and boundless potential,” he said.
