CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte Douglas Airport (CLT) has unveiled its newly revamped Checkpoint 2, a major step in the airport’s Terminal Lobby Expansion (TLE) project, designed to enhance screening efficiency for passengers. According to WCNC Charlotte, the new checkpoint opened for limited operations on Monday, March 24, and became fully operational by Wednesday, March 26.
Checkpoint 2, now the primary screening location for TSA PreCheck passengers and flight crews, will replace Checkpoint A, which is set to close permanently later this week. Airport officials emphasized that the opening comes just in time for the anticipated surge in spring break travel.
Faster Screening, Increased Efficiency
Jack Christine, the Chief Infrastructure Officer at Charlotte Douglas Airport, underscored the importance of the new checkpoint in improving operational efficiency.

“The opening of Checkpoint 2 is a major milestone in the Terminal Lobby Expansion project, as streamlining security checkpoints from five to three while increasing capacity will provide passengers with a faster, more efficient screening experience,” Christine said.
The consolidation of checkpoints is expected to enhance passenger processing efficiency, reducing wait times and accommodating the increasing number of travelers passing through Charlotte Douglas. The upgraded Checkpoint 2 is projected to significantly improve screening capacity and ensure a smoother experience for passengers.
Addressing Growing Passenger Demand
Charlotte Douglas Airport served a record 58.8 million travelers in 2024, with 18 million passengers using the terminal lobby for arrivals and departures. The airport’s growing passenger numbers have underscored the need for enhanced security infrastructure to manage increasing traffic.
Checkpoint 2 is a critical component of the broader TLE project, which aims to modernize the airport’s facilities and improve the overall passenger experience. Consolidating security checkpoints from five to three is expected to reduce congestion and enhance the airport’s ability to process passengers efficiently, particularly during peak travel periods.
Additional Terminal Enhancements Coming Soon
Airport officials also announced that further enhancements to the terminal lobby are on the horizon. These improvements include the addition of two new baggage carousels in the baggage claim area and three automated exit lanes near the ticketing area. Although specific timelines for these enhancements have not been disclosed, they are expected to further improve passenger flow and operational efficiency.
Impact on Travelers and Security Protocols
With the new checkpoint now operational, travelers are advised to plan accordingly and familiarize themselves with the updated security screening processes. Passengers can expect a smoother and faster screening experience, particularly those enrolled in TSA PreCheck.
