Residents warned of health risks as Deglos landfill fire continues
CASTRIES, St Lucia — The Ministry of Health, Wellness and Elderly Affairs has issued a public health advisory as the Deglos landfill fire continues to burn, warning that smoke and toxic fumes could pose serious risks to nearby communities.
Officials said the fire is releasing smoke, particulate matter, and potentially harmful gases that threaten air quality and public health. The Ministry urged residents to remain cautious while authorities work to contain and extinguish the blaze.
Vulnerable groups face higher risk
Health officials emphasized that the ongoing Deglos landfill fire is particularly dangerous for vulnerable groups, including children, infants, the elderly, people with asthma and other chronic respiratory illnesses, heart disease patients, pregnant women, and outdoor workers.
“The Ministry of Health is urging individuals to reduce smoke exposure and protect their health,” the advisory stated. Residents were advised to stay indoors with windows and doors closed, use fans or air conditioning if available, and avoid outdoor activity near the landfill. Those who must go outdoors were told to wear a properly fitted N95 mask.
Symptoms linked to smoke exposure
People exposed to the smoke may experience irritation of the eyes, nose, and throat, coughing, difficulty breathing, chest pain, palpitations, and worsening of conditions such as asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Other possible effects include headaches, dizziness, and fatigue.
Health authorities advised anyone experiencing such symptoms to seek medical care immediately at the nearest facility.
Ministry, NEMO coordinate response
The Ministry said it is working closely with the National Emergency Management Organisation (NEMO) to distribute protective masks to affected residents. Officials pledged to provide timely updates as the situation develops.
“We thank the public for their cooperation and encourage everyone to stay vigilant, support one another, and stay safe during this time,” the Ministry said.
