Shock in Gros Islet as Kunta dies suddenly on Chapel Street
GROS ISLET, St Lucia – June 12, 2025 – Stephen William, better known by his street name “Kunta,” died suddenly on Tuesday morning in Gros Islet, stunning residents who awoke to find his lifeless body along Chapel Street. The 63-year-old street personality, widely known for his bold public persona and self-proclaimed title as President of the Vagrants Association, collapsed near a fence after reportedly falling on a tree stump and suffering a fatal throat injury.
Emergency responders from the Saint Lucia Fire Service arrived at the scene shortly after 6 a.m., following a call from passersby. According to the Fire Service, responders found the man lying in a prone position with no signs of life. A medical practitioner later pronounced him dead at the scene.
“On assessment, it was observed that his throat was penetrated by a tree stump,” a statement from the Fire Service said. No further official information has been released regarding the cause of death or whether foul play is suspected.
An eyewitness who spoke to a local news source described the moments leading up to the incident. Philomen Bretney, a vendor known in the area as “Sister,” said she was preparing for her early morning bread sales when she saw William walking up Chapel Street in a visibly unstable condition.
“We saw the man, me and my neighbor, we saw him walking, coming up the road towards us,” Bretney recalled. “But he was moving as if he was sick; not drunk, but like he was tossing here and there.”
She added that moments later, he stumbled and collapsed. “When we went to look, we saw the man was not moving… we thought maybe he just fell… but he’s still not getting up.”
A van carrying several men, including a former police officer, happened to be passing by. Upon realizing the seriousness of the situation, they called for emergency assistance.
Residents say William appeared noticeably quieter than usual the day before his death. Known for his outspoken behavior and frequent street-side monologues, he had been spotted attending a local football match but was uncharacteristically subdued.
Kunta was a familiar and controversial figure across northern St Lucia. He gained local notoriety from a series of viral videos and often delivered candid and sometimes comedic commentary on life, society, and politics. Despite his circumstances, he fashioned himself as a leader and referred to himself as president of a loosely formed “vagrants association,” adding a performative layer to his public identity.
Though many viewed him as a nuisance, others regarded him as a symbol of resilience, an eccentric, outspoken man who had carved out a space in public life despite homelessness and marginalization.
The Saint Lucia Royal Police Force has not released a statement regarding the incident. It remains unclear if an autopsy or formal investigation is underway.
As the community grapples with the loss of a polarizing but familiar presence, tributes have quietly begun surfacing online, reflecting a mix of humor, sympathy, and reflection on the life of a man who, by choice or circumstance, never conformed.
