Public backlash grows over SLASPA parking fee hike tied to GPH asset transfer.

The Saint Lucia Air and Sea Ports Authority (SLASPA) has announced a parking fee hike at Hewanorra International Airport, effective 12:01 a.m. on Jan. 27, 2025, according to a press release issued by the authority. The updated rates include $5 per hour, $25 daily for parking exceeding 10 hours, and a weekly fee of $100, with a $50 charge for lost tickets.

According to SLASPA, the new rates are intended to improve parking management and enhance the experience for airport users. The press release also highlighted that control access systems for the Southern Taxi and Staff Car Parks will not be operational for at least another month. During this interim period, Ports Police will monitor access to ensure compliance and prevent unauthorized use.

However, the Hewanorra International Airport fee hike comes against the backdrop of the Saint Lucia Air and Seaports Authority’s controversial decision to transfer its most lucrative revenue-generating assets to Global Ports Holding (GPH). Observers point to the broader context of SLASPA’s asset transfer to GPH and question whether these measures align with protecting local interests. Critics have described the parking fee increase as exploitative and a direct financial hit on the people of Saint Lucia already grappling with economic challenges.

To further aggravate concerns, some question how these parking fees might affect future developments in St. Lucia’s airport infrastructure and whether locals will continue to shoulder such costs. Observers have described the parking fee increase as a direct financial hit on residents already grappling with economic challenges.

SLASPA has acknowledged the challenges that may arise during this transition and has requested cooperation from the public. The Saint Lucia Air and Seaports Authority (SLASPA) has pledged to provide updates on the implementation of the new parking system as further progress is made.

For further details about the updated parking rates or to address any concerns, SLASPA encourages individuals to contact their customer service team directly.
