Concerned Citizen counters SLP’s overcooked propaganda and failures.

CASTRIES, St Lucia – A recent commentary circulating on social media, authored by Terrence Fernelon, serves as a classic case of SLP shameless overcooked propaganda. Dressed up as a defense of the Philip J. Pierre administration, the piece attempts to paint a rosy picture of Saint Lucia’s current state while launching predictable attacks against the United Workers Party (UWP). But behind the theatrics lies a sobering reality: the so-called “gains” of the Saint Lucia Labour Party (SLP) have been nothing more than unsustainable handouts, economic mismanagement, and vote-buying schemes that have left the nation more vulnerable than ever.
Terrence Fernelon’s praise for the SLP government is laced with fearmongering, suggesting that a UWP return would bring doom to Saint Lucia. Yet it is precisely the SLP’s governance that has driven Saint Lucians into an economic quagmire marked by rampant corruption, skyrocketing inflation, ballooning debt, and collapsing investor confidence.
Unsustainable giveaways sold as “progress”
Central to Terrence Fernelon’s defense is a laundry list of programs from “Youth Economy” grants to “bonuses for pensioners” paraded as evidence of progress. In reality, these measures are fiscally reckless and politically motivated giveaways that do little to strengthen the long-term resilience of Saint Lucia’s economy.
The so-called “Youth Economy,” for instance, has yet to generate meaningful job creation or entrepreneurial growth. While young people receive minor handouts, real employment opportunities remain scarce. Under UWP leadership, investments focused on tourism expansion, infrastructure development, and private sector growth aimed at creating sustainable jobs, not dependency.
Similarly, the heavily touted “Teachers Monthly Allowance” and “Payment of CXC Subjects” provide temporary relief but fail to address the deeper structural deficiencies in the education sector. Under the SLP, schools remain underfunded, teacher training lags, and many students still lack access to modern learning facilities. The UWP, in contrast, prioritized educational reform and infrastructure investments aimed at long-term improvement.
Gimmicks over governance
Fernelon bemoans the cancellation of public spectacles like the Baton Relay and scaled-back versions of the Jazz Festival, conveniently ignoring the far larger economic and social failures under SLP rule. The UWP had moved Saint Lucia towards meaningful investment partnerships, infrastructure modernization, and tourism diversification to strengthen the island’s economic foundation.
Unlike the misleading narrative pushed by SLP loyalists, the GPH port contract exposed serious concerns for Saint Lucia, raising questions about transparency, national interests, and foreign control. The scandal surrounding the deal underscored growing fears of political recklessness, as highlighted in Unitedpac St Lucia News’ in-depth coverage of the controversy (I Bought the Government: St Lucia Scandal). Rather than canceling the project for the country’s protection, the Pierre administration’s handling of GPH has only deepened skepticism over its competence in managing foreign investment and safeguarding Saint Lucia’s long-term economic stability.
Health care hypocrisy
In one of the more cynical portions of his piece, Fernelon invokes the Cuban Eye Care Program, blaming the UWP for attempting to phase it out. Yet under SLP governance, Saint Lucians still grapple with long hospital wait times, shortages of medical supplies, and an overwhelmed health care system. The UWP invested heavily in building the OKEU Hospital and expanding health care infrastructure to serve the population long-term, solutions that go far beyond outsourcing critical care to foreign governments.
Divisive politics as distraction
Perhaps most revealing is Terrence Fernelon’s pivot to personal attacks. Unable to defend SLP’s crumbling record, he accuses the UWP of campaigning on “racism, hate, and desperation.” This tired playbook of division and fearmongering is all the Pierre administration has left to offer Saint Lucians who are increasingly disillusioned with broken promises and daily struggles under SLP leadership.
While the SLP points fingers, UWP remains focused on delivering stable leadership, attracting foreign investment, restoring economic confidence, and implementing real policies that will lift all Saint Lucians, not just the politically connected few.
Saint Lucia deserves better
The record is clear: while the SLP engages in shameless overcooked propaganda, the UWP offers a path forward based on economic growth, stability, and opportunity. The people of Saint Lucia deserve more than hollow slogans and short-term vote-buying schemes. They deserve real leadership.
As Saint Lucians head to the polls, voters will have a clear choice: remain trapped under unsustainable handouts and rising debt, or choose the UWP’s proven record of economic competence, job creation, and national development.
By now, even Terrence Fernelon should know what Saint Lucians have already decided: Yellow is the Code. And that code isn’t just a color, it’s the key unlocking real leadership, real opportunity, and a brighter future for every Saint Lucian tired of failed promises and empty propaganda.
