Gros Islet police launch inquiry as St Lucia police probe suspected drowning
CASTRIES, St Lucia — St Lucia police probe suspected drowning after the body of a young man was discovered along the shoreline of Five Dollar Beach in Cas En Bas early Thursday morning.
The Royal Saint Lucia Police Force reported that officers from the Gros Islet Police Station responded to the scene around 5 a.m. and found 20-year-old Keishon Felicien of St. John Street, Gros Islet, lying motionless on the sands of Five Dollar Beach. A medical practitioner later confirmed his death at the location.
According to initial information from a witness, the incident began the previous evening, September 24, when Felicien and two other individuals went out in a canoe to retrieve fishing nets off the Cas En Bas coast. While carrying out the task, the small vessel was struck by a wave and overturned. The two others swam safely back to land, but Felicien was unable to make it to shore.
Police said a post-mortem examination will be carried out to determine the official cause of death. The St Lucia drowning incident remains under investigation.
The latest case follows other recent water tragedies across the island, including the discovery of Wilter Joseph, whose body was recovered from the Bexon River earlier this year, and the suspected drowning of a 70-year-old man in Soufriere.
The Royal Saint Lucia Police Force offered condolences to Felicien’s relatives and friends, noting that investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident remain active.
