CASTRIES, St Lucia — St Lucian Green Card holders living in the United States are now subject to the United Kingdom’s new immigration policy that ended visa-free access for St Lucian citizens and introduced a mandatory visitor visa requirement beginning March 5, 2026.
The policy change means that St Lucian nationals who hold lawful permanent residency in the United States must still obtain a UK visa before traveling to Britain for tourism, business, or family visits. While a U.S. Green Card can help demonstrate legal residence and strong ties to the United States, it does not exempt travelers from the visa application process.
For many members of the St Lucian diaspora in the United States, the new rules represent a major shift in travel procedures, requiring additional documentation, longer processing times, and advance planning before visiting the UK.
Why St Lucian Green Card holders are affected
Under the revised UK entry policy, all St Lucian passport holders must apply for a Standard Visitor Visa before traveling to the United Kingdom.
The visa typically permits short stays of up to six months for tourism, business meetings, or family visits. Applicants must complete an online application through UK Visas and Immigration, pay the visa fee, and attend a biometric appointment where fingerprints and photographs are collected.
Holding a U.S. Green Card may strengthen a visa application because it confirms that the traveler is a legal resident in the United States and has established ties outside the UK. This can help reassure British authorities that the applicant intends to return to their country of residence after the visit.
However, the Green Card does not provide any exemption from the visa requirement itself. St Lucian Green Card holders must follow the same application process as other St Lucian citizens.
Transit rules tighten for St Lucian Green Card holders
The policy change also affects travelers passing through UK airports.
St Lucian citizens may now be required to obtain a Direct Airside Transit Visa even when they are only connecting to another flight and do not intend to enter the United Kingdom.
This rule could affect diaspora travelers who previously used London airports as a major transit hub for flights between the United States, Europe, Africa, and the Caribbean.
Airlines and travel advisers say travelers must now verify their visa status before booking routes that involve connections through the UK.
Transition window until April 16
UK authorities have introduced a limited transition period to allow travelers with existing approvals to enter under the previous system.
St Lucian travelers who already obtained an Electronic Travel Authorisation and booked their travel before March 5, 2026, may still enter the UK without a visitor visa if they arrive before 15:00 BST on April 16, 2026.
After that deadline, the visa requirement will apply fully to all St Lucian passport holders. Travelers planning visits to the UK after mid-April are therefore being advised to begin the visa application process well in advance.
Application process and required documents
The visa process requires several supporting documents to verify identity, financial stability, and ties to the applicant’s country of residence.
Applicants must provide a valid St Lucian passport and proof of lawful U.S. residence, including a Green Card. Additional documents may include bank statements, employment letters, and other evidence demonstrating the intention to return to the United States after the visit.
Applications are submitted through the UK Visas and Immigration online portal, where applicants must create an account and upload supporting documentation.
After submitting the application and paying the visa fee, travelers must attend a biometric appointment at an authorized visa application center, including facilities operated by VFS Global.
Processing times generally range between 25 and 30 working days, depending on appointment availability and application volume.
New planning realities for diaspora travelers
For St Lucian Green Card holders accustomed to relatively straightforward travel to the United Kingdom, the new visa requirement introduces an additional layer of preparation and cost.
Travelers must now factor visa processing timelines into their travel plans and ensure that all documentation is submitted well before departure dates.
The change also reflects a broader tightening of entry procedures affecting St Lucian passport holders, particularly those who frequently travel between North America, Europe, and the Caribbean.
With the transition period set to expire in mid-April, St Lucian Green Card holders planning trips to the United Kingdom are being urged to review the new requirements carefully and begin the application process early to avoid disruptions.
