MIAMI, Florida – Tropical Storm Helene, which previously intensified to a powerful Category 4 hurricane, has weakened but continues to pose a significant threat as it moves inland. According to the National Hurricane Center’s latest update on Friday, September 27, 2024, Helene has been downgraded from a Category 1 hurricane to a tropical storm, with maximum sustained winds of 70 mph. The storm is now passing through Georgia and heading toward North Carolina and South Carolina.
Flooding Threat Grows as Tropical Storm Helene Weakens
After making landfall on Florida’s Big Bend coast late Thursday, Helene brought life-threatening storm surges and widespread flooding. Storm surges reached as high as 20 feet in some coastal areas, leading to the evacuation of thousands. In Georgia, the storm has left thousands without power, while significant rainfall in the Southern Appalachians has triggered flash floods and landslides.
Helene’s forward speed has slowed, and it is expected to stall over the Tennessee Valley by tonight, bringing additional rainfall and continuing to flood large areas. Officials are warning of up to 20 inches of rain in some regions, especially in parts of the Southern Appalachians.
Current Warnings and Evacuations
Although the storm has weakened, a Tropical Storm Warning remains in effect for parts of South Carolina and North Carolina. Dangerous winds and heavy rainfall continue to threaten these areas, with flash flood warnings issued for large portions of the Carolinas and Virginia. Tornadoes are also a risk today across central and eastern North Carolina and southern Virginia.
Residents in affected areas are urged to remain cautious and heed all local warnings. Emergency services continue to work around the clock, responding to reports of significant flooding and landslides in regions with steep terrain.
