Young Saint Lucians urged to resist fear as United Youth condemns SLP intimidation

Castries, Saint Lucia – United Youth has issued a bold statement condemning what it describes as the Saint Lucia Labour Party (SLP) government’s efforts to silence young voices. In a scathing rebuke, United Youth condemns SLP intimidation, citing growing concerns that young people who have spoken out against the administration’s policies are now being unfairly targeted, particularly those who have benefited from the Youth Economy Agency (YEA) grants. The organization argues that government funding should empower, not control, the youth of Saint Lucia.

United Youth Official Press Release

United Youth stands in firm defense of the young people of Saint Lucia who are being unfairly attacked by the Saint Lucia Labour Party (SLP) government for exercising their democratic right to speak out against the issues plaguing our country.

It is deeply concerning that youth who have received grants from the Youth Economy Agency (YEA) are now being pressured into silence and targeted for criticism simply because they have spoken out against the harmful policies of this administration. A grant from the government does not equate to ownership of one’s voice. Saint Lucian youth owe no political loyalty to any party or administration simply because they have accessed funding meant to empower them.

United Youth finds it disgraceful that the government is using publicly funded programs as a weapon to suppress free speech among young people. This is not democracy; this is intimidation. Young entrepreneurs and professionals must be free to express their concerns about the rising cost of living, record-breaking crime rates, lack of job opportunities, and overall economic hardship without fear of retribution.

This latest attempt to silence young people reflects the hypocrisy of the SLP government, a government that claims to champion youth empowerment while simultaneously trying to control and silence the very youth it pretends to support.

United Youth calls on all young Saint Lucians to reject fear and intimidation and to stand firm in defending their right to speak out. We will not be bullied into silence. We will continue to challenge policies that hurt our people, and we will hold those in power accountable.

The youth of Saint Lucia deserve better. We demand a government that respects and encourages open dialogue, not one that seeks to suppress dissent.

Defending Free Speech and Youth Empowerment

The United Youth’s statement highlights growing concerns over political interference in youth advocacy and economic empowerment programs. The organization reaffirms its commitment to defending the rights of young people and urges the government to foster an environment that respects democratic principles, rather than one that stifles free expression.
