Investigation launched after alleged assault deepens unrest at St Judes Hospital leadership

VIEUX FORT, St Lucia — Unrest at St Judes Hospital has intensified after allegations surfaced that Nursing Director Cherianna St Marie-Philip physically assaulted a subordinate nurse during a confrontation over a disputed job appraisal.

According to staff accounts, the incident began when the nurse entered St Marie-Philip’s office to raise concerns about changes to her performance evaluation. The appraisal, initially rated favorably by her immediate supervisor, had reportedly been downgraded following review by the Nursing Director.

Witnesses said the discussion escalated into a heated exchange. When the nurse attempted to leave the office, St Marie-Philip allegedly pursued her and struck her, causing a facial injury. The report has unsettled hospital employees and raised concerns about the leadership culture at the Vieux Fort medical facility.

Hospital administration and union response

Hospital officials confirmed that St Marie-Philip has been relieved of her duties pending the outcome of an investigation. Chief Executive Officer Lydia Atkins and the board of directors, chaired by Lucius Ellevic, have pledged to conduct a thorough review of the matter.

In a statement, the St Lucia Nurses Association (SLNA) said it was monitoring the situation closely while emphasizing due process.

“The St Lucia Nurses Association is aware of the alleged incident at St Judes Hospital. At this time, we are unable to provide any information until a thorough investigation has been conducted,” the organization said. “It is our hope that the matter will be resolved amicably, restoring unity and confidence among the nursing staff. Our nurses remain committed to their duties, and this incident does not compromise the quality of care.”

The St Lucia Nurses Association (SLNA) urged the public and the media to exercise discretion in handling information related to the case.

Wider implications for healthcare leadership

The allegations have triggered debate within the health sector about standards of professionalism and accountability in leadership roles. Staff members say the incident has created an atmosphere of unease at the hospital, raising questions about morale, workplace culture, and patient care.

Observers note that how the hospital responds could set a precedent for addressing workplace conflicts and maintaining ethical standards in Saint Lucia’s healthcare institutions. These leadership challenges also come against the backdrop of ongoing scrutiny over cost transparency in the St Jude Hospital project, highlighted in Unitedpac St Lucia News’s earlier report on the 2024 hospital budget.

As the investigation unfolds, both staff and the wider community are awaiting clarity on the next steps. The outcome, hospital officials acknowledge, will influence not only internal policies but also public confidence in the institution’s ability to provide safe and professional care.
