SLP insiders insult public in Facebook thread defending Tinubu’s St Lucia visit
CASTRIES, St Lucia, July 20, 2025 – A Facebook thread involving prominent Saint Lucia Labour Party (SLP) affiliates and supporters has ignited public fury after a series of contemptuous remarks were directed at Saint Lucians expressing concern over the recent state visit by Nigerian President Bola Tinubu, an international figure clouded by allegations of corruption and financial impropriety.
In a post by House Speaker Claudius J. Francis, a staunch Saint Lucia Labour Party (SLP) figure, the public’s scrutiny of Prime Minister Philip J Pierre was dismissed as hypocritical. Francis defended Tinubu’s reception by likening it to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ceremonial honor in Trinidad and Tobago. Francis wrote, “Yet those who know better wish to criticise PM Pierre,” suggesting that the backlash against Tinubu’s visit is unfounded and politically motivated.
The response was swift and increasingly inflammatory.
Attorney Thaddeus M. Antoine weighed in, calling the public’s reaction “intellectual dishonesty at its very best,” triggering a torrent of scornful commentary from fellow SLP-aligned voices. Maundy A. L. Lewis took direct aim at the intelligence of Saint Lucians questioning the visit, writing, “Where’s the intellect though?” She later added, “Some are proving that certification does not cure ignorance.”
The derogatory tone intensified further. Kenny Bakie wrote, “Their stupidity knows no bounds,” while Caron Tobiere described the situation as simply “sad.”
These remarks have enraged many citizens, who view the Saint Lucia Labour Party-affiliated commentariat’s dismissive tone as a betrayal of the people’s right to question foreign relations, especially when involving a foreign leader with a documented history of controversies.
President Tinubu’s background includes being named in multiple U.S. court filings linking him to alleged money laundering networks during his time in the private sector. Despite this, Prime Minister Pierre rolled out a red-carpet welcome, sparking fierce debates over the administration’s judgment and diplomatic standards. The government even went as far as shutting down both airports to accommodate Tinubu’s arrival, prompting logistical headaches and criticism from the public.
Rather than engage in public discourse with humility or accountability, Saint Lucia Labour Party loyalists appeared more interested in belittling critics.
Arthur Neptune, another participant in the thread, sought to defend the comparison to Modi. He stated, “Narendra Modi is the current and 14th Prime Minister of India, having first taken office in 2014. He has been re-elected for a third consecutive term as of June 2024.” However, many observers note that invoking Modi, a democratically elected leader of the world’s largest democracy with a radically different international profile, only deepens the perceived absurdity of the comparison.
Netizens, activists, and political observers have condemned what they view as elitist arrogance and tone-deafness from the ruling party’s ranks. One commenter, Cornelia Jacob, responded sarcastically to Lewis, saying, “Do you think that they KNOW that they DON’T know better?” The comment captured growing frustration with what many perceive as an out-of-touch governing class.
Prominent social media voices like Nettie Mac Donald summed up the sentiment with sharp clarity. “We have established that their criticism is their campaign strategy, a very poor one at that,” she wrote.
The timing of this incident could not be worse for the Philip J Pierre administration. The Saint Lucia Labour Party government is already battling public discontent over its handling of the Citizenship by Investment Program, violent crime surges, and economic stagnation. The attempt to silence or belittle concerned citizens, rather than acknowledge legitimate national unease, has only deepened the chasm between the SLP government and the people it claims to serve.
The controversy over Tinubu’s visit had already sparked widespread corruption backlash, with many questioning the optics of celebrating a leader with such a troubled past. The inflammatory Facebook thread has now escalated public frustration into full-blown political outrage.
Political analysts say the administration and its allies may have seriously miscalculated. What began as a controversial visit by a foreign leader has now mushroomed into a public relations disaster, exposing the contempt with which some party loyalists apparently view the very public they are elected to represent.
Saint Lucians are demanding answers, not insults. As criticism continues to mount, the SLP may find that the real threat to its credibility lies not in foreign scrutiny, but in the arrogance of its own echo chamber.
