Police probe shooting linked to attempted robbery
CASTRIES, St Lucia – An attempted robbery at La Clery supermarket escalated into a shooting Monday afternoon, leaving a security guard injured and transported to hospital for medical treatment, according to preliminary police information. The incident occurred at Falcon Mart Supermarket, formerly known as Wintrades Supermarket, around 1 p.m. on Jan. 19.
Police said several armed individuals entered the supermarket during business hours and attempted to carry out a robbery. Initial reports indicate that four assailants were involved. During the incident, the on-duty security guard was shot while responding to the situation. Authorities have not confirmed the extent of his injuries or released an official update on his condition.
Officers from the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force responded to reports of gunfire and secured the scene shortly after the shooting. Investigators remained at the supermarket for several hours collecting evidence and interviewing witnesses as part of the ongoing probe.
Police have not confirmed whether any cash or merchandise was taken. No arrests had been announced as of Monday evening, and investigators have not released descriptions of the suspects.
The shooting unfolded in a busy commercial area in La Clery, a densely populated community on the outskirts of central Castries. The daytime incident has prompted concern among nearby business operators and residents, many of whom rely on supermarkets and wholesale outlets that employ private security as a precaution against armed robberies.
Law enforcement officials said they are reviewing available surveillance footage from the supermarket and surrounding businesses to establish a clear sequence of events. Witnesses who were in or around the area at the time of the incident are also being interviewed.
Police appealed to members of the public who may have seen suspicious activity in La Clery around 1 p.m. on Monday to come forward with information that could assist the investigation. Tips can be provided directly to the Criminal Investigations Department or through established confidential reporting channels.
Authorities said further updates will be issued as confirmed information becomes available.
