Caribbean Sugar Association Unity in Sugar Production
The Caribbean Sugar Association (SAC) has stepped forward to address concerns surrounding a potential brown sugar shortage in St. Lucia, emphasizing that the region possesses ample resources to meet its own sugar needs.
Responding to local media reports, SAC Chairman Mac McLachlan stressed the availability of regionally produced brown sugar. He acknowledged the critical nature of maintaining a stable sugar supply and demand balance but pointed out the strength of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) with its four member countries and eight sugar producers. This translates to numerous options for sourcing brown sugar within the region, eliminating the need for external imports.
The Caribbean has the sweet solution to its own sugar needs,” emphasizes the Sugar Association of the Caribbean, assuring regional availability and urging community support for food security goals
Furthermore, the Caribbean Sugar Association SAC highlighted the significant role the regional sugar industry plays in achieving the ambitious “25% x 2025 food-import-reduction target” established by CARICOM member states and championed by regional agricultural ministers. Despite witnessing a rise in regional sugar consumption, the industry remains committed to ensuring the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME) effectively supports the trade of sugar and other regionally produced food items.
The SAC concludes by encouraging all members of the Caribbean community to actively support these regional objectives. By doing so, the community can collectively contribute to strengthening food security and minimizing the financial burden associated with food imports.
This statement from the SAC serves as a reassurance to consumers in St. Lucia and across the Caribbean. It underscores the region’s self-sufficiency in brown sugar production and emphasizes the commitment to achieving food security through regional collaboration and support.
