Dennery Shooting Update: Saint Lucia Reaches 50 Homicides Amidst SLP Governance Anniversary

In a heartbreaking development, the second victim of the double shooting in La Resource, Dennery, has died. This latest fatality adds to the tragedy that unfolded on Saturday, July 27, when gunfire erupted, claiming the life of one resident immediately and critically injuring another.

The second victim, identified as 39-year-old Angus Jeffery of Belle Vue, Vieux Fort, passed away at approximately 10:00 p.m. on Sunday at St. Jude Hospital. Jeffery and his colleague, 22-year-old Ernest William, also of Belle Vue, Vieux Fort, were traveling in a white Suzuki Swift when they came under gunfire from unknown assailants around 6 PM on July 27. William was pronounced dead at the scene. This incident brings the number of homicides in Saint Lucia for the year to 50.

01
of 08
Incident Overview

The initial report detailed the shocking event where Jeffery and William were attacked while traveling in La Resource, Dennery. William succumbed to his injuries on-site, while Jeffery was transported to St. Jude Hospital in critical condition. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, he died the following evening.

02
of 08
Community Reaction

The residents of Bellevue, Vieux Fort, are reeling from the loss of Jeffery and William. The double homicide has deeply affected the community, known for its strong family connections and close-knit social fabric.

03
of 08
Law Enforcement Response

Law enforcement authorities in Saint Lucia are intensifying their investigation into the double homicide. Preliminary findings suggest the attack was targeted, though no official statements have been made about suspects or motives. Police are urging anyone with information to come forward to aid in the investigation.

04
of 08
Ongoing Public Safety Concerns

The tragic incident has amplified concerns about public safety in Saint Lucia, especially in rural areas like Dennery. Residents are calling for a stronger police presence and more effective measures to curb gun violence. Local leaders have echoed these concerns, advocating for immediate action to restore community security.

05
of 08
Governance and Public Perception

This grim milestone of 50 homicides was reached on a day when the Saint Lucia Labour Party (SLP) celebrated three years in office, touting what they claim to be a period of good governance. However, the country’s rising homicide rate presents a stark contrast to the administration’s narrative of progress. As the SLP marked their governance anniversary, the nation faced the somber reality of 50 homicides in just over the first six months of the year.

06
of 08
Separate Incident in Bocage

In a separate case, a man who was stabbed earlier this month in Bocage, Castries, passed away over the weekend. A post-mortem examination is pending to determine if his death resulted from the stabbing injuries. Should this be confirmed, his death will be classified as a homicide, increasing the island’s total to 51.

07
of 08
Moving Forward

As the investigation continues, the community of Bellevue and the wider Dennery Valley remain on edge, seeking justice for the victims. The deaths of Angus Jeffery and Ernest William underscore the urgent need for comprehensive strategies to combat violence in Saint Lucia.

08
of 08
Call for Public Assistance

Authorities are appealing to the public to assist in the investigation by providing any information that might lead to the apprehension of those responsible. Information can be reported anonymously to the local police station or through the confidential crime hotline.

Unitedpac St. Lucia news will continue to monitor this developing story and provide updates as new information becomes available.
