Fiery California plane crash in Fullerton claims 2 lives, injures 19
FULLERTON, Calif. — A devastating plane crash on Thursday left two people dead and 19 others injured after a small aircraft collided with a furniture manufacturing building in Fullerton, California. The tragic incident, which occurred less than two minutes after takeoff from Fullerton Municipal Airport, has prompted federal investigations and raised concerns over small aircraft safety.
The Fullerton Police Department confirmed that the victims who died were believed to have been on the plane, while those injured were inside the building, which housed Michael Nicholas Designs, a furniture upholstery company. Approximately 200 workers were present at the time of the crash.
According to reports from The Associated Press, the single-engine Van’s RV-10 aircraft experienced an emergency shortly after takeoff. The pilot contacted air traffic control to request a return to the airport but crashed before completing the maneuver. Security footage from a nearby business showed the aircraft tilting on its side before striking the roof, triggering an explosion and sending a thick plume of black smoke into the air.
Chris Villalobos, an operations worker at the airport, described the pilot as a frequent flyer at Fullerton Municipal Airport. “He has a hangar here and everything,” Villalobos said, noting the tragedy has shaken the local aviation community.
First responders acted swiftly, battling the flames and evacuating nearby businesses. Eleven people were transported to local hospitals, while eight others were treated at the scene for minor injuries. The identities of the deceased have not yet been released, pending family notification.
Fullerton Mayor Fred Jung called the crash a “solemn tragedy” in a public statement, expressing condolences to the victims’ families. “The City of Fullerton is committed to supporting those affected and ensuring a thorough investigation into the incident,” Jung said.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have launched investigations into the crash. Early inquiries are focusing on the aircraft’s maintenance records and the circumstances surrounding the pilot’s emergency declaration.
