Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre Faces Backlash as Ernest Hilaire Political Scandal Deepens

Castries St Lucia – Once again, the Philip J. Pierre administration finds itself embroiled in controversy as it rallies its supporters to protect Deputy Prime Minister Dr. Ernest Hilaire. This familiar pattern of defending Hilaire, despite his track record of scandals stretching over years, has raised eyebrows across the country. From the West Indies cricket board fiasco to the Juffali scandal, and now the ever-deepening Citizenship by Investment Program (CIP) passport controversy, the SLP administration seems determined to shield Hilaire from accountability rather than provide answers to the Saint Lucian public.

Hilaire’s involvement in questionable financial dealings is no secret. His tenure at the West Indies Cricket Board left a legacy of turmoil, and the Juffali affair remains a sore point, a scandal involving diplomatic immunity under highly suspicious circumstances. Now, Hilaire is once again at the heart of another scandal, the Citizenship by Investment Program (CIP) passport debacle, where billions of dollars from the Citizenship by Investment Program (CIP) fund are unaccounted for. Yet, instead of transparency and accountability, the Saint Lucia Labour Party (SLP) is doubling down, urging supporters to protect Hilaire from criticism.

A Legacy of Scandals

For years, Hilaire has been linked to one controversy after another. During his time with the West Indies Cricket Board, Ernest Hilaire was a key figure in decisions that led to widespread dissatisfaction and unrest in the cricketing community. His involvement in the Juffali scandal brought international embarrassment to Saint Lucia, where diplomatic immunity was exploited in a legal dispute involving a Saudi billionaire.

However, the most damaging scandal yet could be the ongoing CIP passport controversy. The program, initially aimed at boosting the economy by selling Saint Lucian citizenships, has instead become a hotbed of corruption, with billions in passport sales allegedly siphoned off. Hilaire’s association with Caribbean Galaxy, a company with ties to the CIP program, has only added fuel to the fire.

As if this weren’t enough, the Range Rover Scandal is another example of the government’s disregard for the people’s business. Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre, in a gross display of misplaced priorities, personally attended court to support Hilaire in a case surrounding the questionable importation of a luxury Range Rover vehicle by Hilaire.

While Saint Lucians struggled with rising costs and crumbling infrastructure, Pierre made it clear that his loyalty to Hilaire was more important than addressing the urgent needs of the nation. His courtroom appearance sent a disturbing message to the public—protecting Hilaire’s interests mattered more than governing the country effectively. Instead of focusing on the real issues, Pierre chose to prioritize the legal troubles of his scandal-ridden ally, further deepening the public’s distrust in the administration.

A Betrayal of Public Trust

A concerned Saint Lucian citizen recently expressed their outrage over the situation in a scathing commentary. Their words reflect the growing frustration among the public:

“What a joke!!! Billions of our CIP funds are unaccounted for, money that could be used to relieve the hardships that St Lucians are suffering, remove the gas tax, remove the 2.5% levy, provide medication, equipment, and supplies to our hospitals, provide e-books with the curriculum pre-loaded so that parents are not burdened with the exorbitant costs of school books, repair our roads, not have to borrow $201,000,000 to complete St Jude’s Hospital, subsidize food items to help struggling families.

But instead of being honest, transparent, and accountable to us about how many of OUR passports were allocated and sold by Caribbean Galaxy and ensuring WE get OUR citizenship money, you are asking SLPs to protect you???? Who is protecting SAINT LUCIANS!!”

These sentiments capture the frustration of many who feel abandoned by a government that promised better but has instead become consumed by scandal and corruption. The citizen’s mention of basic needs—healthcare, education, and infrastructure—reminds us all of the dire state of affairs in Saint Lucia, where these critical sectors remain underfunded and neglected, even as billions in CIP funds go missing.

Protecting the Wrong People

The Pierre administration’s latest call to protect Hilaire is a blatant betrayal of the Saint Lucian people. In a country struggling with rising costs of living, inadequate healthcare, and a crumbling infrastructure, the focus should be on fixing these problems, not shielding corrupt politicians from accountability. The administration’s refusal to provide transparency on how CIP funds have been used—or more accurately, misused—has only deepened the divide between the government and the people it claims to serve.

Many Saint Lucians are left wondering: who is protecting them? As the government scrambles to defend Hilaire, there is a deafening silence when it comes to addressing the real issues facing the country. Roads are in disrepair, schools are underfunded, and the healthcare system is collapsing, yet the Pierre administration seems more concerned with protecting one of its own than with governing for the good of the people.

A Call for Accountability

The time has come for the Pierre administration to stop protecting the likes of Ernest Hilaire and start protecting the interests of Saint Lucians. The government’s priorities are shockingly misplaced. Instead of transparency, accountability, and a clear plan to address the CIP scandal, we are witnessing a government in damage control, asking loyalists to circle the wagons around a man whose legacy is tarnished by scandal.

Saint Lucians deserve better. They deserve answers about where their CIP money has gone and how the country will move forward from this scandal. They deserve a government that is focused on improving their lives, not on saving the political careers of those who have betrayed their trust. The more the Pierre administration tries to protect Hilaire, the more it undermines its own credibility and legitimacy.

The Saint Lucian people are tired of the same old excuses. As the government scrambles to defend Hilaire yet again, the question remains: who is protecting Saint Lucians from the corruption that has plagued their government for far too long?

In Summary

Saint Lucia’s current government faces an undeniable reckoning. As calls to protect Dr. Ernest Hilaire from criticism grow louder, the voice of the people is rising above it, demanding transparency, accountability, and justice. For too long, corruption has festered at the highest levels, but the public is no longer willing to accept empty promises and distractions. The focus must shift to protecting the interests of Saint Lucians and holding those responsible for the misuse of CIP funds accountable. The era of impunity must end.
