Major Crimes Unit confirms Loic Augustin charged with murder in Marigot investigation
CASTRIES, St Lucia, May 25, 2025 — The Royal Saint Lucia Police Force (RSLPF) has formally charged a resident of Coolie Town, Marigot in connection with the fatal shooting of Justin Raphael, which occurred on Sunday, April 27, 2025.
According to official police updates, officers from the Marigot Police Station responded to a report of a shooting incident in Marigot around 9:30 p.m. Upon arrival, officers discovered one unresponsive male at the scene, bearing apparent gunshot wounds. The individual was later pronounced dead on the scene by a medical practitioner. A second individual sustained non-fatal injuries during the incident.
The deceased was identified as twenty-four (24) year-old Justin Raphael of Jacmel. The Royal Saint Lucia Police Force later indicated that officers from the Major Crimes Unit assumed responsibility for the investigation on April 29, 2025, referring to the deceased as a twenty-three (23) year-old from Jacmel, Anse La Raye.
In a significant update, the RSLPF reported that on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, the Major Crimes Unit, working in conjunction with the Special Patrol Team, conducted an operation which led to the arrest of Loic Augustin, a resident of Coolie Town, Marigot.
Augustin was subsequently charged on Wednesday, May 21, 2025, with the offences of Murder and Attempted Murder in relation to the incident. He was escorted to the First District Court on Thursday, May 22, 2025, where he was remanded into custody at the Bordelais Correctional Facility.
In response to the progress of the investigation, Commissioner of Police Verne Garde issued a statement commending the coordinated effort that led to the matter being brought before the judiciary. He also extended gratitude to the general public for their continued collaboration with law enforcement officers.
“The multi departmental efforts, which had resulted in the advancement of this matter to the judiciary, are commendable,” Commissioner Garde stated. “We thank the public for their collaboration, which undoubtedly contributes to the marked progress in crime reduction.”
Commissioner Garde further encouraged sustained partnerships with all stakeholders, emphasizing the vital role of the public in supporting law enforcement’s mission.
