of 04Failed Robbery in Corinth Ends in Death
On Sunday, December 15, 2024, a foiled robbery attempt at a bar in Corinth, Gros Islet, left one of the perpetrators dead. Reports indicate that two masked men entered the establishment around 1:30 a.m., brandishing firearms and demanding valuables from patrons. However, the suspects were confronted by two licensed firearm holders.
During the confrontation, 20-year-old Alex Straker was shot and fatally wounded. He reportedly sustained a gunshot injury to the chest and collapsed at the scene. A post-mortem examination is pending as police continue their investigation.
The bar’s owner, Denis Louis, emphasized the importance of self-defense, noting, “People are prepared to protect themselves… having their firearm license will keep [criminals] away.”

of 04Rising Crime Crisis Under SLP Administration
These latest homicides see the Philip J. Pierre-led Saint Lucia Labour Party (SLP) government setting a new national record for the highest number of homicides in a single year. This year’s toll has surpassed previous records set under the same administration in 2022 and 2023, making it the third consecutive year that the number of homicides has increased under their watch.
There are whispers that the actual homicide figures could be higher. Allegations have emerged that the Philip J. Pierre administration is exerting pressure on mainstream media outlets sympathetic to their government to suppress the real numbers for political reasons. These claims have added to the growing unease among residents as the country struggles to address its escalating violent crime problem.
