Police Launch Saint Lucia Homicide Investigations Following Corinth Shooting and George V Park Death

Castries, Saint Lucia – The Royal Saint Lucia Police Force has launched Saint Lucia Homicide Investigations into two violent incidents over the weekend that resulted in deaths at Corinth and George V Park, raising concerns about the island’s escalating crime rate.

Failed Robbery in Corinth Ends in Death

On Sunday, December 15, 2024, a foiled robbery attempt at a bar in Corinth, Gros Islet, left one of the perpetrators dead. Reports indicate that two masked men entered the establishment around 1:30 a.m., brandishing firearms and demanding valuables from patrons. However, the suspects were confronted by two licensed firearm holders.

During the confrontation, 20-year-old Alex Straker was shot and fatally wounded. He reportedly sustained a gunshot injury to the chest and collapsed at the scene. A post-mortem examination is pending as police continue their investigation.

The bar’s owner, Denis Louis, emphasized the importance of self-defense, noting, “People are prepared to protect themselves… having their firearm license will keep [criminals] away.”

George V Park Homicide

In another tragic incident, police responded to a report at George V Park in Castries early Tuesday, December 16, 2024, at approximately 12:12 a.m. Officers discovered the motionless body of a man, later identified only as “Mark,” a transient known in the area. The deceased had a visible laceration to his face and was transported to the Owen King European Union (OKEU) Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Authorities have yet to determine the circumstances surrounding his death and are urging anyone with information to assist by contacting the Criminal Investigations Department at 456-3770 or the Crime Hotline at 555.

Rising Crime Crisis Under SLP Administration

These latest homicides see the Philip J. Pierre-led Saint Lucia Labour Party (SLP) government setting a new national record for the highest number of homicides in a single year. This year’s toll has surpassed previous records set under the same administration in 2022 and 2023, making it the third consecutive year that the number of homicides has increased under their watch.

There are whispers that the actual homicide figures could be higher. Allegations have emerged that the Philip J. Pierre administration is exerting pressure on mainstream media outlets sympathetic to their government to suppress the real numbers for political reasons. These claims have added to the growing unease among residents as the country struggles to address its escalating violent crime problem.

Escalating Calls for Action

The recent incidents, marking Saint Lucia’s 76th and 77th homicides, have heightened fears across communities, particularly as the festive season brings increased activity and vulnerability.

Amid rising homicide figures, calls for comprehensive crime prevention strategies and proactive policing continue to grow louder across the island.

Unitedpac St. Lucia News will continue to monitor this story and provide updates as investigations into these incidents unfold.
