Teen dies after stabbing in Castries as St Lucia records first homicide of 2026
CASTRIES, St Lucia — St Lucia has recorded its first homicide of 2026 following the fatal stabbing of a teenage boy during a late-night altercation in Castries, police confirmed Saturday.
The victim, identified as a 16-year-old male, died after sustaining multiple stab wounds during an incident near the Grande Riviere bus stand along Jeremie Street on Friday night. Police said the teenager was from Darling Road, Castries, and had been residing in Corinth.
According to the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force, officers received a report of a stabbing at approximately 11:20 p.m. Initial investigations indicate that the incident occurred during an altercation between the teenager and another male in the vicinity of the bus stand, a central area that remains active late into the night.
Despite suffering serious injuries, the teenager reportedly fled the immediate scene and made his way to Darling Road. Members of the public assisted him and transported him to hospital in a private vehicle.
Medical personnel attempted emergency treatment, but the injuries proved fatal. The teenager was pronounced dead at approximately 12:45 a.m. Saturday.
Police have launched a homicide investigation and were continuing inquiries as of press time. No arrests had been announced, and authorities have not released information regarding a motive or suspect.
The killing has generated renewed concern in Castries, particularly due to the age of the victim and the public nature of the incident. Residents described the event as deeply troubling and reflective of broader challenges surrounding youth violence and dispute escalation.
The homicide comes after a violent year in which St Lucia recorded 85 homicides in 2025, the highest number on record. While official figures have been confirmed through police data, public discussion of the scale of last year’s violence has been the subject of criticism, with some commentators arguing that the severity of the crime situation has not been consistently reflected in local media coverage.
Law enforcement officials have repeatedly emphasized the importance of community cooperation, early intervention, and information sharing as part of efforts to address violent crime. Friday night’s killing underscores the continued urgency of those measures as the new year begins.
Police are urging anyone with information that may assist the investigation to contact the Criminal Investigations Department or report to the nearest police station. Authorities stressed that even limited details could prove crucial in determining the circumstances surrounding the fatal encounter.
As investigations continue, the death marks a sobering start to 2026 and renews calls for vigilance, accountability, and collective action to stem violence across the island.
