Police investigate Vieux Fort collision involving minibus and car
VIEUX FORT, St. Lucia — A Vieux Fort collision late Sunday night near the Marine Base claimed the life of a young man following a head-on crash involving a private motor car and a minibus, authorities said.
The collision occurred along the roadway near the Marine Base in Vieux Fort. Emergency responders were dispatched to the scene, where the young male occupant of the motor car was pronounced dead. Several passengers traveling in the minibus, including the driver, sustained injuries of varying degrees and were transported to hospital for medical treatment. Officials have not disclosed the number of injured or their current conditions.
Video footage circulating on social media appears to show the moment of impact and indicates significant damage to the front ends of both vehicles. Authorities have not commented on the footage or confirmed details depicted in the video.
The Royal Saint Lucia Police Force said an investigation is underway into the circumstances surrounding the Vieux Fort collision. The identity of the deceased has not been officially released, pending notification of relatives. Investigators have not indicated a cause and have not said whether speed, mechanical failure, or other factors are being considered at this stage.
The deceased has been identified by relatives and friends on social media as Viclann Joseph, though police have not formally confirmed his identity. Authorities said the name will be released once next of kin have been officially notified.
The latest crash adds to a series of serious traffic incidents reported in the south of the island in recent years.
