Police investigate suspected drowning after Wilter Joseph found dead in Crownlands River at Bexon
CASTRIES, St Lucia — Police in St Lucia are investigating the death of 43-year-old Wilter Joseph, who was found dead in the Crownlands River at Bexon on Wednesday afternoon. Authorities said the case is being treated as a suspected drowning.
Police confirm discovery in Bexon
According to the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force, officers from the Criminal Investigations Department received a call about a possible drowning around 2:56 p.m. on Aug. 20. Responding officers were directed to a location near a bridge along the Crownlands River, where they discovered the unresponsive body of a man.
He was later identified as Wilter Joseph, a Crownlands resident also known in the community by the nicknames “Ti Cout” and “Yardman.”
Body transported to hospital
Police said Joseph’s body was transported to the Owen King European Hospital, where a medical professional officially pronounced him dead. A post-mortem examination has been scheduled to determine the cause of death.
Investigations underway into suspected drowning
While the case is currently being treated as a suspected drowning, investigators said inquiries are continuing to clarify the events that led to Joseph’s death. Officers are collecting statements and examining evidence as part of the probe.
Community shaken by sudden loss
The news of Joseph’s death has left Crownlands residents in shock. Locals described him as a familiar figure in the community, and the incident has renewed concerns about the dangers of the river, especially during the rainy season when water levels rise.
The incident follows another suspected drowning earlier this week, when a 70-year-old Choiseul man reportedly lost his life in Soufriere. Read more about that case here.
Police call for public assistance
The Royal Saint Lucia Police Force has appealed to members of the public with information to come forward to aid the investigation. Officials said further updates will be released as details emerge.
