Authorities hail massive Castries port gun seizure as largest illegal arms recovery this year

CASTRIES, St Lucia — June 2, 2025 — In one of the most significant blows yet to St Lucia’s illegal arms trade, law enforcement officials seized 17 firearms and more than 3,000 rounds of ammunition during a high-level operation at the Castries port, authorities confirmed.

The joint security operation, executed on May 27, was led by the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force’s Gang, Narcotics and Firearms Unit, working alongside the Special Operations Team, Customs and Excise officers, and the K-9 Unit. The coordinated raid unfolded at the Wharf section of the busy Castries seaport, which remains a strategic transit point for both legal and illicit shipments entering the island.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Ronald Phillip, who briefed the media following the operation, praised the collaborative effort and underlined its significance amid growing concerns over the island’s escalating gun violence.

“I want to first of all commend the officers for their continued efforts in assisting to minimize criminal activity in Saint Lucia,” Phillip stated. “These successful police operations occurred while the officers were on routine patrol. The connected operations at Wharf resulted in the recovery of a significant quantity of illegal firearms and ammunition.”

Authorities credit the K-9 Unit for playing a critical role in detecting the hidden weapons cache. Ronald Phillip emphasized recent strategic investments aimed at enhancing the K-9 Unit’s capability to assist in both narcotics and firearms detection.

“I want to say that the detection was assisted through the use of our canine unit,” Phillip noted. “In recent times, we have taken steps to improve our canine unit to assist us in the detection of drugs and firearms.”

While police have not disclosed specific details regarding the origin of the seized weapons or their intended recipients, investigations remain ongoing. Authorities are working to trace the trafficking network responsible for moving the cache into the island, a process that could expose both local operatives and international suppliers involved in the illicit trade.

The latest recovery marks one of St Lucia’s largest firearm seizures in 2025, underscoring both the scale of the gun smuggling crisis and law enforcement’s intensified response. Just weeks earlier, officers intercepted another major cache of firearms and narcotics in a separate operation at Port Castries, highlighting the persistent challenges authorities face at the nation’s maritime entry points (related story here).

The proliferation of illegal firearms has been directly linked to rising violent crime rates, including homicides, armed robberies, and gang-related shootings that have gripped several communities across the island.

Law enforcement agencies have pledged to maintain heightened vigilance at the nation’s borders and ports of entry, particularly as criminal syndicates continue to exploit vulnerabilities in the maritime shipping industry to traffic firearms, drugs, and other contraband into St Lucia.

Customs and Excise officers involved in the operation reiterated the importance of sustained multi-agency collaboration to identify, intercept, and dismantle trafficking operations before the weapons reach criminal hands.

“This seizure represents a significant disruption to illegal firearm distribution on the island,” one Customs official said on condition of anonymity due to the ongoing investigation. “It also highlights the importance of intelligence sharing and joint operations that have become increasingly necessary in confronting these sophisticated smuggling methods.”

Police officials indicated that routine patrols, supported by intelligence gathering and targeted inspections, remain central to their strategy in intercepting illegal shipments. Authorities also continue to encourage public cooperation in providing information that can assist ongoing investigations.

The Royal Saint Lucia Police Force, which has faced mounting pressure in recent months over surging gun violence, has vowed to intensify its efforts in dismantling organized crime networks responsible for arming criminal factions.

As authorities pursue leads in the ongoing probe, they have appealed for public assistance, urging anyone with credible information to contact the police confidentially. The seizure, officials say, may ultimately uncover a broader criminal network involved in weapons trafficking across the Eastern Caribbean.
