Grand Ravine Dennery Homicide Sparks Community Outcry for Justice and Stricter Gun Laws

Dennery, Saint Lucia – The quiet community of Grand Ravine, Dennery, was shaken by a fatal shooting in the early hours of Friday, June 14, 2024. The Royal Saint Lucia Police Force (RSLPF) has confirmed that the incident occurred around 2:30 a.m., claiming the life of a local resident.

Incident Details

According to the official report from the RSLPF, officers from the Richfond Police Station responded to a shooting at Grand Ravine. Upon arriving at the scene, detectives found an unresponsive male victim showing apparent gunshot wounds. A medical doctor later confirmed the victim’s death at the scene. The deceased has been identified as 41-year-old Destor Samuel, also known as “Dexter,” of Grand Ravine, Dennery.

Official Investigation

The RSLPF has referred this homicide to the Major Crimes Unit for a thorough investigation. Detective Inspector Robert James, leading the investigation, has urged anyone with information to come forward. “We are committed to solving this case and bringing the perpetrator to justice. The cooperation of the community is essential,” said Detective Inspector James.

The RSLPF encourages anyone with information to contact the Major Crimes Unit at 456-3754. Alternatively, anonymous tips can be provided by dialing 555 (the Crime Hotline) or using the RSLPF Crime Hotline Application, available on the Google Play Store.

Community Reaction

Dexter’s death has left the Dennery community in mourning. Known for his friendly demeanor and active participation in local events, Dexter’s sudden and violent death has deeply affected many residents. Friends, family, and community members have been gathering to offer support and comfort to his grieving relatives.

“We are devastated,” said a close friend of Dexter. “He was a good person, always willing to help others. This senseless act of violence has taken him away from us too soon.”

Family’s Call for Action

In an emotional statement to the St. Lucia Times, a family member, who requested anonymity, criticized Saint Lucia’s gun laws as too lax and called for stricter regulations. “The gun laws should be draconian to deter the use of illegal weapons,” the family member said, urging justice for Dexter and advocating for mandatory jail terms for illegal firearm possession without the possibility of bail.

The family member stressed that the ease with which individuals obtain guns and the subsequent empowerment they feel contribute significantly to the island’s violence. “People kill each other for the silliest of reasons,” they lamented, highlighting the need for better conflict management education and tougher legal consequences for gun-related offenses.

Rising Homicide Rate

Dexter’s murder brings the total number of homicides in Saint Lucia to 41 for the year, highlighting the escalating violence on the island. This tragic event follows closely on the heels of two double homicides that occurred just days ago—one in Marchand and the other in Rodney Bay—further underscoring the severity of the crime situation in Saint Lucia.

In response to the rising crime rates, the government has pledged to implement stricter gun control measures and increase funding for law enforcement agencies. Additionally, community outreach programs aimed at addressing the root causes of violence, such as poverty and lack of opportunities, are being prioritized.
