Go-fast boat seized off Gros Piton; suspects assisting police

CASTRIES, St. Lucia (April 18, 2025) — The Royal Saint Lucia Police Force (RSLPF) has launched an investigation after intercepting a go-fast vessel carrying a 1,000-pound illegal conch haul off the island’s west coast on Wednesday, April 16, 2025.

According to an official statement, officers from the St Lucia Police Marine Unit pursued and stopped the vessel approximately four nautical miles southwest of Gros Piton during a routine maritime patrol. Upon boarding and inspecting the vessel, police discovered a large quantity of conch, locally known as lambi, without the required permits and clearances.

Authorities say the individuals aboard the vessel are currently assisting with the investigation. Their identities have not been disclosed, and no charges have been announced at this time.

Conch fishery open, but strict conditions apply

The conch fishery in Saint Lucia is open year-round, but its operation is subject to specific regulations. Under the Saint Lucia Fisheries Act, fishers must obtain proper licensing and transport documentation to harvest or carry marine products like conch.

Failure to comply with these regulations could result in a summary conviction and a fine of up to $5,000.

In light of the seizure, the Saint Lucia Department of Fisheries is reminding the public to adhere to all applicable rules during the open season. The department emphasized that unauthorized harvesting or transport of marine resources is prohibited and subject to enforcement.

For further information on regulations, the Department of Fisheries can be reached at 468-4143, 468-4141, or 725-1722, or via email at deptfish@govt.lc.

Investigation ongoing; compliance urged

Law enforcement officials have not confirmed the origin of the vessel, nor whether it was registered locally or internationally. The Police Marine Unit continues to gather information as part of the active investigation.

The Department of Fisheries has also urged stakeholders in the maritime sector to ensure full compliance with fisheries regulations to support the sustainable management of Saint Lucia’s marine resources.

Members of the public who witness or suspect illegal marine activity are encouraged to report it to the appropriate authorities.

Further updates will be provided by law enforcement or the Department of Fisheries as more details become available.
