Applications close March 13 as 2026 JET Programme selects one local candidate

CASTRIES, St Lucia — Applications for the 2026 JET Programme are now open to nationals of St Lucia, offering a unique opportunity to live and work in Japan as an Assistant Language Teacher while participating in a structured cultural exchange initiative, according to an announcement from the Embassy of Japan.

The 2026 JET Programme will select one St Lucian candidate to be placed in Kagoshima Prefecture, where the participant will assist in English language instruction in schools and engage in community-based cultural exchange activities. The programme is designed to strengthen international understanding while supporting English education across Japan.

Officials said the 2026 JET Programme goes beyond classroom teaching. Participants are expected to share aspects of St Lucia’s culture with Japanese communities, contributing to people-to-people diplomacy and fostering long-standing bilateral ties between the two countries. In return, participants gain professional development, intercultural competence, and exposure to Japanese society.

Nationals of St Lucia have participated in the JET Programme since 2003, with past participants contributing to Japan’s education sector while serving as informal cultural ambassadors for the island. The Embassy of Japan noted that these exchanges have helped deepen mutual respect and cooperation between Japan and St Lucia over more than two decades.

Successful applicants under the 2026 JET Programme will initially be contracted for one year. Based on performance and mutual agreement, contracts may be renewed annually for up to three years, with the possibility of extension for a maximum total period of five years.

The application period runs from January 16, 2026, to March 13, 2026. Officials stressed that no extensions will be granted beyond the stated deadline.

Applicants must meet the eligibility requirements outlined by the JET Programme, including holding at least a bachelor’s degree, demonstrating a strong interest in cultural exchange, and showing adaptability to life in Japan. Candidates must also be mentally and physically healthy to meet the demands of overseas placement.

Interested applicants are encouraged to review full eligibility requirements and application guidelines on the Embassy of Japan’s official JET Programme page before completing the required two-step submission process. All required documents must first be scanned and emailed to culture@po.mofa.go.jp, after which the original documents must be mailed to the Embassy of Japan at 5 Hayes Street, St Clair, Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, attention the JET Coordinator.

Additional details on eligibility criteria, required documentation, and programme expectations are available on the Embassy of Japan’s official website. The Embassy encouraged motivated and globally minded St Lucians to apply, describing the 2026 JET Programme as a rare opportunity for professional growth, cultural immersion, and international service.

The programme forms part of Japan’s broader efforts to promote international exchange and English education through the Japan Exchange and Teaching Programme, which has hosted thousands of participants from around the world.

For St Lucia, participation in the 2026 JET Programme continues a tradition of educational and cultural engagement with Japan, providing young professionals with global exposure while reinforcing diplomatic and cultural links between the two nations
