DENVER (Unitedpac St. Lucia News) — A shocking incident unfolded at Denver International Airport as an American Airlines plane catches fire, forcing passengers to evacuate onto the wing while thick black smoke billowed into the air, according to CNN. The unexpected emergency involving American Airlines Flight 1006 has raised fresh concerns about aviation safety as investigations into the cause of the aircraft fire get underway.

The flight, which departed Colorado Springs for Dallas-Fort Worth, was forced to divert just 30 minutes after takeoff due to engine issues. Upon landing at Denver International Airport, one of the plane’s engines caught fire on the tarmac, triggering a dramatic evacuation.

Terrifying scenes unfolded as passengers scrambled to exit the aircraft, some using the emergency slide while others evacuated onto the wing. Videos from the scene captured passengers running for safety through thick black smoke as bright orange flames raged behind them.

Audio from LiveATC.net suggests that pilots initially did not declare an emergency but reported high engine vibrations before slowing the aircraft. However, moments after landing, air traffic control received a distress call:

“Mayday, Mayday, Mayday! … Engine fire!”

The plane reached gate C38, where airport firefighters quickly extinguished the flames.

Twelve hospitalized, quick response praised

The Denver Fire Department confirmed that 12 passengers were hospitalized with minor injuries, but all passengers and crew were safely evacuated.

American Airlines commended the swift action of emergency responders, stating:

“We thank our crew members, DEN team, and first responders for their quick and decisive action with the safety of everyone on board and on the ground as the priority.”

Passenger Ingrid Hibbits described the fear as flames erupted outside her window.

“Everyone started screaming, and you hear, ‘Fire!’ When I looked out, I saw flames and the window bubbling, like melting,” she told CNN affiliate KTVT.

Another passenger, Michele Woods, had noticed an unusual engine noise earlier in the flight.

“Smoke started to fill the cabin, and people started screaming and pushing,” she said, recalling how she tried to calm two frightened young girls near her.

Eyewitnesses watch in shock

The dramatic scene unfolded in full view of passengers inside Denver International Airport, including Kristal Leonard, who was waiting for a connecting flight.

“I was terrified for those passengers,” Leonard told CNN. “I can’t even imagine how scared they must’ve been.”

Video footage captured airport ground crews quickly suppressing the flames, turning thick black smoke into a misty white haze.
