ST. JOHN’S, Antigua and Barbuda — Elon Musk’s CHOGM visit is in doubt after Prime Minister Gaston Browne disclosed that objections had emerged over the billionaire’s potential attendance at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, raising uncertainty about his participation just days before the international summit.

Gaston Browne said Musk, the billionaire entrepreneur behind Tesla and SpaceX, had indicated a willingness to visit Antigua and Barbuda for the November 1-4 gathering. However, concerns subsequently emerged that his presence could attract disproportionate attention and overshadow the summit’s diplomatic agenda.

According to remarks reported by Antigua News Room on October 26, Browne suggested Musk was now unlikely to attend but did not identify who raised the objections or provide details about their origin.

The development comes as Antigua and Barbuda prepares to host leaders and representatives from the Commonwealth’s 56 member countries for discussions on investment, climate resilience, international cooperation and sustainable development.

There has been no confirmed announcement that Musk was formally disinvited, barred from attending or had personally withdrawn from the event.

Browne reveals objections to Musk’s possible attendance

Browne’s disclosure marks a change from earlier public statements in which he expressed optimism about Musk’s potential participation.

In September, the prime minister said Musk had indicated that he might attend the Commonwealth gathering, although his appearance remained subject to availability.

At the time, Browne was discussing a proposed partnership with SpaceX, which he said was expected to become a major sponsor of the Commonwealth Business Forum, an investment-focused event taking place alongside the heads of government meeting.

The possibility of Musk attending attracted attention because of his international business profile and his companies’ involvement in satellite communications, electric transportation and other emerging technologies.

However, Browne’s latest remarks indicate that concerns about the attention Musk might attract have complicated those expectations.

The prime minister did not publicly identify the individuals or organizations responsible for raising the objections, according to the available reporting.

Consequently, it remains unclear whether the concerns originated with Commonwealth officials, participating governments, summit organizers or other parties.

No independently verified statement from the Commonwealth Secretariat has established that Musk’s participation was formally opposed or rejected.

Elon Musk’s CHOGM Visit puts summit priorities in focus

The uncertainty surrounding Elon Musk’s CHOGM visit comes as Antigua and Barbuda prepares for one of the Commonwealth’s most significant diplomatic gatherings.

The Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, commonly known as CHOGM, takes place every two years and provides a forum for leaders to address shared challenges, establish priorities and strengthen cooperation among member countries.

For Antigua and Barbuda, hosting the 2026 summit presents an opportunity to promote investment, strengthen international partnerships and highlight development challenges facing small island states.

Those challenges include climate vulnerability, access to financing, economic resilience and sustainable development.

Musk’s possible participation introduces an additional consideration because of his prominence in international business and technology.

His companies operate in sectors relevant to discussions about connectivity, innovation, transportation and infrastructure development.

However, the concern described by Browne centers on whether the billionaire’s appearance could shift public attention away from the summit’s broader diplomatic objectives.

The available evidence does not establish that Musk’s attendance would disrupt proceedings or interfere with discussions among Commonwealth leaders.

SpaceX sponsorship plans preceded latest objections

The latest uncertainty follows earlier announcements concerning SpaceX’s proposed involvement in activities surrounding CHOGM 2026.

In September, Browne said his government was close to finalizing a partnership with SpaceX that would position the company as a major sponsor of the Commonwealth Business Forum.

The announcement was reported by the Caribbean Media Corporation and other regional news organizations.

Browne indicated at the time that Musk might participate in the gathering, although no final confirmation of his attendance had been announced.

The proposed sponsorship reflected Antigua and Barbuda’s efforts to attract international businesses and investment partners to the Commonwealth meeting.

The Commonwealth Business Forum is designed to connect political leaders, investors, entrepreneurs and policymakers while encouraging partnerships across member countries.

It forms part of a broader program intended to ensure that discussions during CHOGM produce practical economic opportunities.

However, the earlier sponsorship announcements did not establish that Musk’s personal attendance was a condition of SpaceX’s involvement.

Nor has it been confirmed whether the objections subsequently described by Browne have affected the company’s sponsorship arrangements.

Browne discusses $1 million support and Cybertruck pledge

Beyond Musk’s possible attendance, Browne also discussed support associated with the billionaire’s business interests.

According to the October 26 reporting, the prime minister placed the value of support associated with SpaceX and Musk’s group at approximately $1 million.

He also referred to a promised Tesla Cybertruck and expressed hope that the vehicle would arrive in time for the Commonwealth summit.

The available reporting does not establish whether the approximately $1 million represents a completed financial contribution, pledged sponsorship, equipment or a combination of support arrangements.

Similarly, there has been no independently verified confirmation that the Cybertruck has been delivered.

The vehicle had previously featured in discussions about potential transportation arrangements connected to the summit.

In September, Browne suggested that a Cybertruck equipped with satellite technology could potentially be used during the gathering, including for transporting King Charles III, subject to approval.

That proposal was not confirmation that such an arrangement had been approved or incorporated into the summit’s official transportation plans.

There is also no verified evidence that the reported financial or logistical support was conditional on Musk receiving an invitation or attending CHOGM.

The status of those arrangements remains separate from the unresolved question of the billionaire’s participation.

Antigua advances investment plans ahead of Commonwealth summit

The uncertainty over Musk’s attendance comes as Antigua and Barbuda continues preparations for the November gathering.

In an October 20 statement, the government outlined Browne’s efforts to strengthen partnerships involving renewable energy, electric mobility and sustainable infrastructure.

The statement detailed planned discussions with Zoisa North-Bond, chief executive officer of Octopus Energy Generation, concerning electric vehicles intended to support transportation during CHOGM 2026.

According to the government, some vehicles had already arrived in Antigua and Barbuda.

Officials were also examining how the vehicles could support a longer-term national electric mobility strategy after the summit.

The discussions were expected to address charging infrastructure, maintenance, operational requirements and potential financing arrangements.

The government said it wanted partnerships associated with CHOGM to deliver lasting economic and environmental benefits rather than serve only the immediate requirements of the international meeting.

Browne also outlined plans to promote investment opportunities involving renewable energy, sustainable infrastructure and other priority sectors.

These initiatives form part of Antigua and Barbuda’s broader strategy to use the summit to attract investment and strengthen economic cooperation.

However, the October 20 government statement did not establish a direct connection between the electric vehicle partnership with Octopus Energy and the Cybertruck pledge associated with Musk’s business interests.

Commonwealth leaders to focus on investment and climate resilience

The Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting is scheduled for November 1-4, 2026, in St. John’s under the theme “Accelerating Partnerships and Investment for a Prosperous Commonwealth.”

According to the Commonwealth Secretariat’s official CHOGM 2026 information, the gathering will bring together heads of government, ministers and representatives from business, civil society and youth organizations.

The agenda includes climate resilience, trade, innovation, equality and sustainable development.

The meeting will also provide opportunities for smaller Commonwealth countries to advance discussions about financing, climate adaptation and economic vulnerability.

Four major stakeholder forums will take place alongside the gathering, focusing on business, women, young people and civil society.

The Commonwealth Business Forum will provide a platform for investors and policymakers to explore commercial opportunities and partnerships.

For Antigua and Barbuda, the summit represents an opportunity to strengthen its diplomatic profile while advancing investment and development priorities.

The event will also place the Caribbean at the center of Commonwealth discussions involving countries across Africa, Asia, Europe, the Pacific and the Americas.

Musk’s attendance remains unconfirmed as summit approaches

Despite Browne’s latest remarks, no final decision concerning Musk’s participation has been independently confirmed.

The prime minister’s account indicates that objections have complicated the proposed visit, but the identities of those raising concerns and the extent of their influence remain undisclosed.

There has also been no independently verified public response from Musk or SpaceX addressing the latest objections.

The uncertainty leaves open several questions, including whether Musk received a formal invitation, whether his attendance remains under consideration and whether SpaceX’s proposed sponsorship arrangements will proceed as previously outlined.

With Commonwealth leaders scheduled to gather in Antigua and Barbuda on November 1, any clarification from Browne, the Commonwealth Secretariat or Musk’s representatives could establish whether the billionaire will participate.

Meanwhile, preparations for CHOGM 2026 continue, with the summit expected to focus on strengthening international partnerships, expanding investment opportunities and addressing development challenges facing Commonwealth countries.
