NEW YORK — The New York Giants have officially released quarterback Daniel Jones, marking the end of a tumultuous five-year tenure with the franchise. The decision follows a difficult 2024 season in which Jones was sidelined due to a neck injury and later relegated to the bench, a stark contrast to his status as the sixth overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, according to Reuters.
Daniel Jones, 27, struggled to regain his footing this season, amassing just 2,070 passing yards, with 10 total touchdowns across nine games. The team’s poor performance—reflected in a 2-8 record—fueled discussions about changes at quarterback, culminating in his demotion. Reuters notes that despite being medically cleared, Jones remained benched in favor of other options, signaling a shift in the New York Giants’ commitment to their former starter.
The Daniel Jones NFL contract release comes less than two years after Jones signed a lucrative four-year, $160 million contract extension, which included $81 million in guaranteed money. The contract underscored the organization’s faith in him as their long-term leader, but ongoing injuries and inconsistent performances ultimately led the Giants to move on.
This decision also reflects the team’s efforts to mitigate future financial risks. Jones’ deal carried a $23 million injury guarantee for 2025, which the New York Giants were eager to avoid. By releasing him, the organization absorbs a significant dead cap hit but frees itself from future liabilities, setting the stage for a potential rebuild.
Giants Shift Direction After Daniel Jones NFL Contract Release
Daniel Jones, who has faced numerous challenges during his tenure with the New York Giants, expressed gratitude for the support he received. “I’ve had the privilege of playing for a great organization and incredible fans,” Jones told the New York Post. “While it’s disappointing how things turned out, I take full responsibility for the results on the field.”
Head coach Brian Daboll’s decision to demote Jones in favor of rookie Tommy DeVito was a turning point. As noted by the New York Post, this shift came after a 2-8 record, which placed the Giants at the bottom of the NFC East. The team now focuses on rebuilding with younger talent, while Jones seeks a fresh start in the league.
Daniel Jones’ future remains uncertain, but NFL analysts speculate that teams in need of an experienced quarterback may consider him as a backup or bridge option. However, as Reuters pointed out, his recent performance and injury history could affect his market value.
The Giants’ decision to part ways with their former first-round pick signifies a major organizational reset. The team’s leadership has vowed to evaluate talent carefully to position the franchise for future success.
