VIEUX FORT, St Lucia — Kervil Lawrence, 5, died Wednesday afternoon after the vehicle he was travelling in left the road and struck a tree at Il Pirata in Vieux Fort, according to the Saint Lucia Fire Service. Three other occupants were injured.
Kervil has been identified by family and community members as the kindergarten student killed in the crash. His death has left relatives and the Piaye Combined School community mourning the loss of one of their youngest members. Friends, classmates and loved ones described the loss of a young life taken too soon.
Fire Service Responds to Vieux Fort Crash at Il Pirata
The Fire Service said emergency officers responded to the crash at about 2:45 p.m. Responders found four occupants: an adult man, an adult woman and two young boys. Il Pirata sits along a coastal stretch of roadway in Vieux Fort, in the island’s south.
The adults were treated for injuries at the scene, the Fire Service said. One child was found with head trauma, while the other was found with no vital signs. All four occupants were taken to hospital for further care. Kervil was later confirmed dead.
Piaye School Community Mourns Kervil Lawrence
News of Kervil’s death spread quickly through Piaye, a small community in the island’s south bordering Vieux Fort, and the wider district. Classmates, teachers and friends of the family shared tributes on social media as word of the loss circulated through the school community.
Vieux Fort’s Recent Fatal Crashes
Wednesday’s collision is among several fatal crashes reported in the Vieux Fort district this year. In January, Dayna Tobierre died in a single-vehicle crash at Sandy Beach after her car veered off the roadway and struck a tree, injuring a male passenger who was travelling with her. The same month, a man later identified by relatives as Viclann Joseph died in a head-on collision near the Marine Base, when his car collided with a minibus carrying several passengers, both previously reported by Unitedpac St Lucia News. Police have not indicated the incidents are connected.
The Royal Saint Lucia Police Force has not disclosed what caused Wednesday’s crash. No arrests or traffic charges had been publicly announced at the time of publication.
