CHOISEUL, St Lucia — A suspected drowning at Rivière Dorée in Choiseul has claimed the life of 51-year-old Cornelius “Corny” Eugene, a resident of Roblot. The incident occurred on Sunday, Sept. 28, 2025.
Details surrounding Eugene’s death remained unclear following the incident. A video circulating on social media appeared to show his body near the riverbed, prompting concern among residents and renewed questions about the circumstances surrounding his death.
Bystanders were seen near the scene as emergency personnel responded. At the time of the initial reports, the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force had not released a detailed statement outlining how Eugene died or the circumstances that led to him being found near the river.
Recent cases renew concern after suspected drowning at Rivière Dorée
Eugene’s death came amid several other water-related fatalities reported across St Lucia during the period. In March, Wilter Joseph was found dead in the Bexon River. Earlier in the year, a 70-year-old Choiseul man died following a suspected drowning in Soufrière, while police also investigated another suspected drowning in St Lucia.
The succession of incidents placed renewed attention on water-related deaths across the island, including incidents involving rivers, beaches and other bodies of water. Each case, however, occurred under different circumstances, and authorities had not established any connection among them.
As of the initial reporting period, the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force had not released further details on the circumstances surrounding Eugene’s death.
