MEXICO CITY — The US Mission Mexico Security Alert was issued Sunday, warning U.S. citizens across multiple Mexican states to shelter in place due to ongoing security operations, road blockages, and criminal activity.

The alert, released by the U.S. Mission to Mexico on February 22, 2026, affects areas including Jalisco, Baja California, and Quintana Roo, along with parts of Guanajuato, Guerrero, Michoacán, Oaxaca, Nuevo León, and Tamaulipas.

U.S. officials said American citizens in impacted locations should remain in residences or hotels until further notice and avoid unnecessary travel.

U.S. Government Personnel Ordered to Shelter

Under the US Mission Mexico Security Alert, all U.S. government staff at the U.S. Consulate General Tijuana, as well as personnel stationed in Guerrero, Michoacán, and Quintana Roo, have been directed to shelter in place.

Staff assigned to the U.S. Consulate General Monterrey have been instructed to remain within the Monterrey metropolitan area.

The advisory reflects what officials described as active security operations that have resulted in blocked roadways and related disruptions.

Flights Disrupted in Tourist Corridors

Although no airports have formally closed, roadblocks have interfered with airport access and airline operations.

Domestic and international flights were canceled in Guadalajara and Puerto Vallarta. In Puerto Vallarta, taxis and ride-share services have been suspended, and some businesses temporarily halted operations. The alert follows other recent U.S. Embassy advisories affecting Caribbean travel decisions, including a notice involving Ladera Resort in St Lucia.

The affected areas include major tourism corridors frequented by international visitors, including destinations such as Cancún, Cozumel, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum.

Guidance for U.S. Citizens

The US Mission Mexico Security Alert advises U.S. citizens to seek shelter, minimize movement, avoid areas of law enforcement activity, and remain aware of their surroundings.

Officials urged Americans to monitor local media, follow instructions from local authorities, avoid crowds, and keep family and friends informed of their location and well-being.

Emergency services in Mexico can be reached by dialing 911.

U.S. citizens seeking assistance may contact the embassy and consulates in Mexico at (55) 8526 2561 from within Mexico or +1-844-528-6611 from the United States. Additional support is available through the Department of State’s Consular Affairs line.

Officials said the situation remains fluid, and travelers are encouraged to monitor official updates and enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program for alerts.
