New Orleans Attack 2025: Bourbon Street Tragedy Leaves 10 Dead, Dozens Injured

New Orleans, Jan. 1, 2025 – A deliberate New Orleans attack in 2025 has left at least 10 people dead and 30 others injured early Wednesday, authorities said. The incident, which occurred during New Year’s celebrations, unfolded when a man drove a pickup truck into crowds on Bourbon Street before engaging in a deadly shootout with police.

The New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) confirmed that the driver, whose identity has not yet been released, intentionally targeted pedestrians shortly after 3:15 a.m. According to Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick, the driver aimed to inflict maximum harm. “This man was hellbent on creating the carnage and damage that he did,” Kirkpatrick said during a morning news conference.

Sequence of Events

The truck, traveling at high speed, plowed through the crowded street before crashing. When the driver attempted to exit the vehicle, he opened fire, wounding two police officers. Responding officers returned fire, killing the suspect at the scene.

Law enforcement officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed that investigators discovered what appeared to be improvised explosive devices in the truck. Alethea Duncan, assistant special agent for the FBI in New Orleans, stated that authorities are working to determine whether the devices were viable.

Details of the Bourbon Street truck crash were initially reported by Ali Watkins, Devlin Barrett, and Rick Rojas of The New York Times, who provided live updates from the scene and subsequent briefings. According to their reports, the FBI has taken over the investigation, which is being treated as a suspected act of terrorism, though no official designation has been made.

Impact on New Orleans

The attack comes at a critical time for the city, which was poised to celebrate the New Year with large crowds and sporting events, including college football’s Sugar Bowl, set to take place at the Superdome later today. The area of Canal and Bourbon Streets, where the tragedy occurred, had just hosted the Sugar Bowl New Year’s parade hours before the attack.

Governor Jeff Landry described the event as a “horrific act of violence” in a statement on social media, urging prayers for the victims and first responders. He also called on residents and visitors to stay clear of the affected area.

The French Quarter mass casualty event has shaken New Orleans as it prepares for major festivities, including Mardi Gras. According to The New York Times’ reporting, Superintendent Kirkpatrick revealed that most of the victims appeared to be residents rather than visitors.

“Mardi Gras season is just weeks away, and we were preparing for a festive start to the year,” Kirkpatrick said. “Now, we are asking everyone to stay vigilant and avoid this area as our officers and federal partners work to piece together what happened.”

Community Response and Investigation

The discovery of potential explosives adds another layer of concern to the already shocking attack. Law enforcement officials are currently reviewing evidence to understand the suspect’s motives and whether he acted alone.

Anne Kirkpatrick emphasized the city’s resilience despite the tragedy, encouraging people to go about their plans for the day while avoiding the French Quarter. “This is a time for us to come together as a city and support one another,” she said.

The Sugar Bowl tragedy in New Orleans has also brought increased security to the city, with authorities urging vigilance during public gatherings. College football fans are being advised to follow police guidance as the game between Notre Dame and the University of Georgia proceeds at the Superdome.

Ongoing Investigation

Authorities have not yet released the identity of the suspect or detailed any possible connections to extremist groups. The investigation is ongoing, and federal agents are coordinating closely with local officials.

As the city mourns the loss of life, law enforcement remains on high alert to ensure public safety. Updates are expected throughout the day as authorities uncover more details about this devastating incident.
