Rescue teams battle harsh weather in desperate search for missing Alaska plane carrying 10 people
NOME, Alaska — Search and rescue teams are racing against time to locate a missing Alaska plane carrying 10 people that disappeared Thursday while flying over Norton Sound, Alaska. The Alaska plane, operated by Bering Air, was en route from Unalakleet to Nome when it lost contact with radar less than an hour after takeoff.
According to Fox News, the aircraft, a Cessna 208B Grand Caravan, departed Unalakleet at 2:37 p.m. and was expected to arrive in Nome at 4 p.m. However, air traffic control lost communication with the plane about 12 miles offshore. It has since been declared “overdue,” with no wreckage found as of early Friday.

The Nome Volunteer Fire Department has deployed ground search teams along the coast from Nome to Topkok in an effort to locate the missing aircraft. The U.S. Coast Guard has also dispatched an HC-130 Hercules aircraft from Air Station Kodiak to assist in the operation. Additionally, the Alaska National Guard and state troopers are actively participating in the search.
Authorities have noted that adverse weather conditions—including light snow and fog—are severely hindering aerial search efforts. The Nome Volunteer Fire Department has urged the public to refrain from forming independent search parties due to safety concerns, emphasizing the risks posed by extreme weather conditions.

At the time of the aircraft’s departure, temperatures in Unalakleet were around 17 degrees Fahrenheit (-8.3 degrees Celsius), with poor visibility due to snow and fog. These conditions have complicated search operations, limiting visibility and delaying aerial reconnaissance efforts.
Authorities have yet to release the names of those aboard the missing plane. Families of the passengers remain anxiously awaiting updates, as rescue teams continue scouring the region for any signs of the aircraft.
