BRIDGETOWN, Barbados — The Halifax-Barbados route will launch on December 17, restoring direct access from Atlantic Canada after several years without a new Canadian air service and positioning the island to capture rising demand from the region.

The weekly non-stop flight will operate on Thursdays using Air Canada’s 177-seat Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft, creating a new gateway for travelers from Halifax and surrounding markets.

Barbados targets underserved demand through the Halifax-Barbados route

Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc. (BTMI) said the route follows more than 18 months of planning and coordination with Air Canada and regional partners, aimed at unlocking demand in Atlantic Canada, where direct connections have been limited.

Tourism Minister Ian Gooding-Edghill said expanding airlift remains central to the island’s strategy, linking improved accessibility to sustained tourism growth and broader economic impact.

BTMI Chief Executive Officer Andrea Franklin said the service is expected to generate additional visitor arrivals while supporting tourism stakeholders across the sector.

Canada demand drives Barbados airlift expansion

Canada remains one of Barbados’ most important source markets, with steady growth in arrivals and increasing demand across Ontario, Quebec, Western Canada, and Atlantic Canada.

BTMI Director for Canada Eusi Skeete said the new service follows record Canadian arrivals over the past year and expanded capacity from major hubs including Toronto and Montreal.

He said targeted engagement with travel partners and consumers in Atlantic Canada helped build demand for direct access, ultimately leading to the launch of the Halifax service.

The Halifax-Barbados route gives Barbados a direct entry point into a region where travel interest has been rising, but access remained constrained. The expansion also builds on recent aviation developments, including Barbados airport milestone, as Caribbean destinations continue competing for expanded international airlift to sustain tourism growth.
