CASTRIES, St Lucia — The National Taxi Union leadership crisis has deepened after Vice President Isidore Brisefert announced his immediate resignation, becoming the second senior executive member to step down amid growing concerns over governance, transparency, and internal unity.
Brisefert’s departure follows the earlier resignation of the union’s former public relations officer, adding to concerns about instability within the organization’s leadership ranks.
In a strongly worded resignation letter dated May 27, 2026, Brisefert said he could no longer serve within an organization where, in his view, the leadership style of current President Terry Valcin had increasingly reflected “traits of dictatorship rather than democracy, consultation and collective representation.”
The former vice president accused the union’s leadership of failing to uphold principles of accountability, transparency, and meaningful consultation with executive members and the wider membership.
“There has been a troubling lack of accountability, transparency, and meaningful engagement with executive members and the wider membership,” Brisefert wrote.
According to the resignation letter, decisions affecting both the union and taxi operators were frequently made unilaterally without adequate discussion or respect for differing opinions.
Second Resignation Deepens National Taxi Union Leadership Crisis
The resignation is likely to intensify scrutiny of the union’s internal governance, particularly given that it follows the earlier departure of the union’s president.
While the circumstances surrounding the previous resignation differ, the loss of two senior figures within a relatively short period is likely to fuel concerns among members about the organization’s stability and future direction.
Brisefert claimed that during the past two years, Terry Valcin had ignored advice and made little effort to unite the taxi sector or grow the union’s membership.
As vice president, he said he believed leadership should be based on fairness, openness, teamwork, and respect for members’ voices. However, he concluded that he no longer had confidence in the current president or his direction for the organization.
Taxi Operators Could Feel the Impact
The National Taxi Union serves as a key representative body for taxi operators, advocating on issues ranging from transportation policy to tourism-related concerns.
Any prolonged leadership dispute could have implications for the union’s ability to effectively represent members at a time when taxi operators continue to face economic and industry challenges.
Despite resigning from the executive, Brisefert said he remains committed to supporting taxi operators and advocating for their interests.
Neither Terry Valcin nor the National Taxi Union had publicly responded to the allegations contained in the resignation letter at the time of publication.
The latest departure leaves the union facing renewed questions about its governance, leadership culture, and ability to maintain unity among its membership.
