Person of interest apprehended in UnitedHealthcare CEO shooting, advancing Brian Thompson’s death investigation.

NEW YORK CITY – Authorities have identified a person of interest in the UnitedHealthcare CEO shooting, a high-profile case involving the death of Brian Thompson. The CEO, who was fatally shot on December 4 outside the Hilton Hotel in Midtown Manhattan, was heading to his company’s annual investor conference at the time of the attack, according to the NYPD.

Brian Thompson, 50, was approached from behind and shot twice by a masked gunman, police said. The suspect fled the scene on an e-bike, prompting a multi-state search. The UnitedHealthcare CEO shooting has drawn significant attention, with investigators now focusing on the recently apprehended person of interest.

Luigi Mangione, identified as a person of interest in the UnitedHealthcare CEO shooting, captured in surveillance footage and a personal photo.

Person of Interest Apprehended

The individual, identified as 26-year-old Luigi Mangione, was arrested in Altoona, Pennsylvania, after being recognized by a McDonald’s employee who had seen his photo circulated by the NYPD. Mangione was taken into custody without incident, and authorities described him as “nervous” during questioning, CNN reported.

At the time of his arrest, Mangione was in possession of a “ghost gun” with a suppressor, clothing matching the suspect’s description, and a handwritten manifesto that allegedly criticized the health insurance industry.

Details of the Shooting

Thompson was shot twice — once in the back and once in the calf — as he approached the hotel just before 7 a.m., police said. Surveillance footage showed the suspect loitering near the hotel before carrying out the attack.

Police believe Mangione may have used a fake New Jersey ID to check into a Manhattan hostel prior to the shooting. Following the incident, he was seen heading into Central Park and boarding a taxi, which eventually led investigators to Pennsylvania.

Charges Filed

Mangione has been charged with multiple offenses, including felony forgery, carrying a firearm without a license, and possessing instruments of crime. He is currently being held without bail and is scheduled to appear in court on December 23.

Authorities are analyzing Mangione’s handwritten manifesto, which allegedly details grievances against the healthcare industry and accuses companies of prioritizing profits over patient care. Investigators are working to determine whether these grievances are linked to the UnitedHealthcare CEO shooting.

Reaction and Investigation

UnitedHealthcare has expressed gratitude toward law enforcement for their swift response. In a statement, the company called Thompson a “visionary leader” who was dedicated to improving access to healthcare.

The NYPD, in collaboration with Pennsylvania law enforcement, is continuing to examine all evidence related to the case. Commissioner Jessica Tisch reiterated the department’s commitment to holding those responsible accountable.

“This is a significant step in the investigation, but we still have a long way to go,” Tisch said. “We are urging anyone with additional information to come forward.”

Legacy of Brian Thompson

Thompson had been CEO of UnitedHealthcare since 2021 and worked with the company for nearly two decades. He was widely regarded for his efforts to improve healthcare affordability and access for underserved communities. His death has left a void in the healthcare industry, with colleagues and peers mourning the loss of a leader dedicated to making a positive impact.
