Critics erupt as St Lucia shuts airports for Nigerian president

CASTRIES, St Lucia (June 26, 2025) – St Lucia will temporarily close both of its airports for two hours on June 28, 2025, to facilitate security for the arrival of Nigerian President Bola Tinubu, a political figure shrouded in controversy and recently flagged on former U.S. President Donald Trump’s travel ban list. The closures, George F.L. Charles Airport in Castries from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., and Hewanorra International Airport in Vieux Fort from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., have triggered widespread backlash across political and business circles.

Though framed as necessary for national security, the temporary shutdowns have ignited concerns about economic consequences, operational disruptions, and political judgment, particularly for a nation as tourism-dependent as St Lucia. Aviation industry analysts note that even short-lived closures can lead to thousands of dollars in losses per hour, along with delayed flights, missed connections, and shaken airline confidence.

Critics say such a decision, especially to accommodate a figure as contentious as Bola Tinubu, signals poor leadership judgment. The United Workers Party has slammed the move as an “irresponsible surrender of national infrastructure for questionable diplomatic returns.”

Tinubu’s dark shadow: drug ties, corruption, and questions of identity

President Bola Tinubu’s international reputation has long been dogged by allegations of criminal links, corruption, and forged credentials, concerns that have resurfaced sharply amid his controversial visit to the Caribbean.

1. Drug trafficking allegations in the U.S.

In 1993, Bola Tinubu’s U.S. bank accounts were frozen after federal investigators in Chicago linked them to the proceeds of heroin trafficking operations. Though he was never criminally indicted, he agreed to forfeit $460,000 to the U.S. government in a civil settlement. Court documents outlined Tinubu’s association with two known heroin dealers, raising red flags that have persisted for over three decades.

In a recent development, a U.S. federal judge ordered the FBI and DEA to begin releasing records related to their investigations into Tinubu’s alleged drug links. The agencies are currently seeking extensions, citing national security sensitivities, a move that has only intensified public scrutiny.

2. Widespread corruption allegations

Bola Tinubu has also faced repeated accusations of abusing public office for personal gain. Among the most prominent is his alleged connection to Alpha Beta Consulting, a private firm with exclusive rights to collect taxes for Lagos State, a deal widely criticized for lack of transparency. Reports claim Tinubu received a percentage of the revenue, raising serious ethical concerns.

During his presidential campaign, Tinubu was accused of vote buying and leveraging state resources to secure victory. After taking office, his administration awarded a controversial road contract to a firm co-owned by his son, sparking allegations of nepotism and financial impropriety.

In 2024, the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP) ranked Tinubu as the third most corrupt leader in the world, citing asset concealment, patronage networks, and systemic misuse of state power.

3. Certificate forgery and identity confusion

Tinubu’s educational background and identity have been constant sources of political contention. While Chicago State University confirmed his enrollment, it could not verify the authenticity of the certificate he submitted to Nigeria’s electoral commission. Although the BBC found no direct evidence of forgery, the presence of conflicting details, including gender and date of birth mismatches, has only added to the controversy.

Some political observers and critics have suggested that Tinubu may have assumed another person’s identity, though these claims remain under investigation.

4. Authoritarianism and religious division

Often dubbed the “godfather of Lagos politics,” Tinubu has been accused of suppressing dissent and consolidating power through loyalist networks. His recent ban of a widely played protest song critical of his administration drew condemnation from Amnesty International, which warned of growing authoritarianism.

His economic decisions, such as the abrupt removal of fuel subsidies, led to spikes in inflation and cost of living in Nigeria, triggering nationwide protests. Bola Tinubu’s selection of a Muslim running mate, in a religiously diverse country, also drew backlash from Christian leaders.

Despite denying all wrongdoing, the controversies surrounding Tinubu have only deepened since he assumed Nigeria’s highest office. His critics argue that hosting such a figure on St Lucian soil, at significant economic cos,t represents a diplomatic misstep with long-term consequences.

Disruption outweighs diplomacy?

Despite assurances from St Lucia Air and Seaports Authority (SLASPA) and other government agencies that disruptions will be minimal and managed, the move has been described by economic analysts as a “political signal, not a strategic investment.” One sector insider observed that the opportunity cost, cancelled flights, redirected resources, passenger inconvenience is likely to outweigh any gains from diplomatic optics.

The impact is already visible. Multiple international flights scheduled for Saturday, June 28, are expected to face delays, diversions, or outright cancellations due to the two-hour airport closures. Affected outbound flights from Hewanorra International Airport include:

  • American Airlines to Philadelphia (2:00 p.m.), Miami (2:45 p.m.), and Charlotte (3:20 p.m.)
  • Delta Air Lines to Atlanta (3:36 p.m.)
  • JetBlue Airways to New York–JFK at 2:03 p.m. and 5:29 p.m.
  • British Airways to Grenada at 2:45 p.m.

Industry sources indicate that some carriers are preemptively canceling these flights, rather than risk ground congestion or mid-transit diversions, an approach that will have a debilitating impact on St Lucia’s economic activity.

Among those expected to be hardest hit are taxi drivers, hotel operators, guesthouses, villa rentals, and small retail businesses clustered around the airport zones. Many of these enterprises depend on weekend flight traffic, especially during the high summer season, to drive their revenues.

“This kind of disruption doesn’t just affect airlines, it crushes the everyday businesspeople who rely on predictable visitor flow,” said a senior tourism stakeholder familiar with Saturday’s flight manifest. “It sends a message to travelers and tour operators that St Lucia may not be reliable for international scheduling.”

A pattern of ineptitude: mounting scrutiny on Philip J Pierre’s leadership

The airport closure for Bola Tinubu’s arrival is not being viewed in isolation—it’s the latest in what critics describe as a clear pattern of misgovernance under Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre. Opposition leaders, business stakeholders, and independent analysts have repeatedly questioned Pierre’s decision-making, pointing to a string of controversial calls that have weakened national confidence and international credibility.

From the St Lucia Air and Seaports Authority (SLASPA) parking fee hike targeting locals amid rising inflation, to the custody suites project debacle and opaque handling of CIP scandals, Pierre’s administration has consistently displayed what opponents call a tone-deaf approach to governance, prioritizing optics over substance, and loyalty over competence.

“This airport shutdown is not a one-off blunder,” said one senior opposition figure. “It’s part of a chronic governance disorder under Pierre, where national sacrifice is repeatedly demanded without transparency, benefit, or accountability.”

Critics argue that Pierre’s pattern of decision-making reveals poor judgment, weak political instincts, and a disturbing lack of strategic foresight. Instead of consulting stakeholders or assessing the economic cost of grounding international flights, the administration pressed forward with a showy display of diplomacy for a leader mired in scandal.

Philip J Pierre has also faced growing backlash over his failure to address national crime, deteriorating infrastructure, and a public sector plagued by inefficiency and politicization. His responses to mounting national crises are often seen as delayed, dismissive, or deflective, with critics accusing him of hiding behind staged press conferences and scripted media events.

The Bola Tinubu visit may prove to be the breaking point for many St Lucians who now see a prime minister more concerned with international appearances than domestic realities. With no measurable benefit yet disclosed from Tinubu’s visit—and growing public resentment over the economic and reputational cost, many are now asking: How much longer can St Lucia afford this level of leadership?
