Tributes pour in after Sherman Augustin stabbed to death during Carnival celebrations
VIGIE, St Lucia — Sherman Augustin, a rising figure in Saint Lucian football and former player for Antiguan club Grenades FC, was fatally stabbed in Vigie on Carnival Monday. He was 22.
According to initial police reports, the incident occurred in the early hours of July 21. Details surrounding the altercation remain under investigation. The fatal stabbing has stunned Saint Lucia’s sporting community, where Augustin was widely regarded as a disciplined athlete with regional potential.
Augustin played for the Gros Islet District League in the Saint Lucia Semi-Professional Football League and proudly represented the national team. The Saint Lucia Football Association (SLFA) issued an official statement confirming his death and extending condolences to his family and teammates. National assistant coach Francis “Baba” Lastic described him as a selfless team player with boundless dedication and promise.
“Sherman brought passion and inspiration to the game in St Lucia and showed immense potential,” the SLFA’s statement read. “Every time he wore the national colours, he did so with pride and dignity and will surely be missed.”
Augustin was instrumental in the historic success of Grenades FC during the 2024 Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Club Shield in Curaçao. He scored two goals during the tournament, including a decisive 84th-minute goal in the semifinal victory over Dominica’s CCCUL Dublanc FC, helping Grenades become the first Antiguan club to reach the final.
Grenades FC President Chester Hughes paid tribute to Augustin in a public statement, describing him as a natural leader and a spirited personality who made a significant impact both on and off the pitch.
“Since joining us from Saint Lucia, Sherman has been a game-changer,” Hughes wrote. “He helped lead us to our 2022–2023 league title and was vital during our run in the CFU Club Shield. Every time he wore the Grenades jersey, he embodied discipline, humility, and a hunger to win.”
Hughes also recalled Augustin’s vibrant presence during team gatherings, highlighting his balanced lifestyle and cultural pride.
“He was the life of the party at club events, a healthy eater, and a true Lucian when it came to celebrating. We honour you, Sherman, and we’re proud to have had you in the Grenades family.”
The tragedy comes amid a string of violent incidents that have marred the Carnival season. Just days prior, soca artist Mongstar was hospitalized following a shooting in Monchy, which shocked the entertainment community. Additionally, Qwami Polius was shot dead in Marchand, marking another grim reminder of Saint Lucia’s deepening crisis of youth violence.
The football community, from teammates to regional fans, has expressed sorrow and disbelief on social media. Tributes continue to pour in for the young midfielder whose career was cut short just as he was gaining momentum on the regional stage.
