Antigua in Mourning as Nation Grieves MP Asot Michael Amid Suspected Homicide Investigation

Antigua and Barbuda – Antigua in mourning as citizens grieve the tragic death of Member of Parliament Asot Michael, found dead at his home on November 5 in what authorities have since classified as a suspected homicide. Michael was discovered unresponsive at his seaside residence, and law enforcement has launched a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances of his death. The Associated Press reported that authorities have reached out to London for assistance, underscoring the seriousness of the investigation as national grief over Michael’s passing continues to deepen.

Prime Minister Gaston Browne, who described the news as “a profound loss to his family, friends, and the nation,” addressed the country in a statement, calling Michael “like a brother.” Browne, who had a complex but longstanding political relationship with Michael, said that while their relationship had its challenges, his passing left a void. “This tragic event has disturbed me deeply, and I am committed to seeing that justice is served,” Browne said.

Legacy of Service and Controversy

Born in Guadeloupe in 1969, Asot Michael’s political journey began in the mid-1990s when he served as Special Administrative Assistant to then-Prime Minister Lester Bird. Over the years, Michael rose through the ranks of Antigua and Barbuda’s political system, holding key positions such as Chief of Staff and Minister of State, where he earned recognition for his contributions to tourism, economic development, and energy.

Michael’s tenure as the Minister of Tourism was particularly noted for its success, earning him the title of Best Tourism Minister in the Caribbean by the Caribbean Journal in 2016. His efforts to boost tourism contributed to Antigua and Barbuda’s reputation as a prime Caribbean destination. Michael’s leadership on tourism and investment also extended to economic development, where his policies aimed to improve infrastructure and drive foreign investment into the island. However, his political career was not without its share of controversies, including allegations of corruption, which created rifts between him and various political factions over the years.

Despite these challenges, Michael remained a popular and influential figure in the St. Peter constituency, where he was re-elected in 2023 as an independent candidate. His connection to his constituents was unwavering, and they continued to support him despite his tumultuous relationship with the national political establishment. In recent years, Michael and Browne, once political rivals, had worked toward reconciliation. The two were seen together on several occasions, including the opening of Barbuda’s new airport. Reflecting on their final meeting just days before Michael’s death, Browne expressed deep regret, saying, “We had discussed our shared vision for Antigua, and I never imagined it would be the last time.”

Police Investigation and Public Appeal

The Royal Police Force of Antigua and Barbuda intensified its investigation following the initial findings of suspicious circumstances surrounding Michael’s death. According to Chief of Police Atlee Rodney, a specialized task force has been assembled to look into the case. Rodney confirmed that interviews are being conducted with friends, family, and colleagues of Michael as part of the investigation. “We are committed to unearthing every detail of this case to ensure that justice is served,” Rodney said, urging the public to come forward with any information.

As of now, authorities have not named any suspects, but they have expanded the investigation beyond the island. The government of Antigua and Barbuda, in a rare move, has announced a financial reward for information leading to an arrest, showing their commitment to solving the case. In addition, officials have sought help from regional law enforcement agencies, including the British authorities, to aid in tracking potential leads and gathering intelligence.

Antigua in Mourning, Support and Tributes Pour In

As Antigua in mourning processes this unexpected tragedy, tributes continue to pour in from across the nation and beyond. Constituents, colleagues, and regional leaders have expressed their grief, remembering Michael for his lasting impact on Antigua and Barbuda’s political and economic development. Caribbean leaders, including CARICOM officials, have also issued statements of condolence, praising Michael’s commitment to his community and his contributions to tourism.

“Michael was a man of great vision who worked tirelessly for the advancement of Antigua and Barbuda,” said CARICOM Secretary-General Dr. Carla Barnett. “His loss will be deeply felt across the region.”

In addition to the formal tributes, residents of St. Peter, Michael’s home constituency, have gathered in remembrance. Local community leaders are organizing vigils and memorial services, reflecting on Michael’s dedication to the people of Antigua and Barbuda. “He was not just a politician to us. He was someone who cared deeply about our community,” said one local resident. “We will miss him, and we want to make sure justice is done.”

Calls for Justice and Unity

As the investigation continues, there are growing calls for unity and justice. The people of Antigua and Barbuda are not only mourning the loss of a prominent political figure but also demanding accountability for the violent act that has taken his life. Civic leaders, along with the public, are coming together to ensure that the investigation is thorough and that those responsible for Michael’s death are brought to justice.

“This is not just about the loss of a politician; it’s about the loss of a brother, a friend, and a public servant,” Browne said. “We will work together to make sure that justice is served, and we will honor Asot Michael’s memory by continuing to work toward a better Antigua.”

Unitedpac St. Lucia News extends its condolences to the family, friends, and supporters of Asot Michael. His legacy of service and commitment to his country will not soon be forgotten.
