Barbados airport milestone underscores GAIA’s role in driving tourism growth and regional connectivity
Bridgetown, Barbados — The Grantley Adams International Airport (GAIA) marked a historic milestone on Saturday, December 21, with a record-breaking 54 flights in a single day, Barbados Government Information Service (GIS) reported. This Barbados airport milestone underscores the success of the island’s strategic efforts to boost tourism and regional connectivity, with approximately 8,000 passengers arriving on the island, including 2,200 air-to-sea transfers, according to officials.
Minister of Tourism and International Transport Ian Gooding-Edghill, who welcomed the inaugural Delta Airlines Saturday-only flight from New York’s John F. Kennedy Airport, praised the achievement. He noted that the milestone reflects the effectiveness of the Ministry and the Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc.’s (BTMI) airlift strategy.
“Our airlift strategy has been successful in getting more airlift and visitors to Barbados,” Gooding-Edghill said. “Today is also a very historic day for the Grantley Adams International Airport. I must tell you that this airport witnessed 15 wide-body flights, 15 narrow-body flights, and 24 regional flights.”

Gooding-Edghill credited BTMI’s Director for the USA, Peter Mayers, and his team for playing a key role in negotiating additional flights to the island. The Minister also emphasized the increase in passenger numbers compared to pre-pandemic levels, stating that GAIA is projected to handle 2.35 million passengers by the end of the year, up from 2.29 million in 2019.
“Peter, I want to say thank you, not only on behalf of the Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc., not only on behalf of the Ministry of Tourism but certainly on behalf of the Government and the people of Barbados, for your continuing service excellence and your dedication to the development of Barbados as a tourism destination,” Gooding-Edghill said.

GAIA Chief Executive Officer Hadley Bourne highlighted recent initiatives to improve airport operations and enhance passenger experience. Among the most impactful developments is the opening of the Concorde Experience, which has reduced congestion in the main terminal.
“On any given Friday or Saturday, there’s a throughput through that facility in excess of 1,500 passengers. This takes a significant load off the main terminal, allowing for greater commercial activity,” Bourne said.
Bourne added that the feedback from passengers and stakeholders has been overwhelmingly positive, noting that customer experience remains central to GAIA’s operations.

As reported by the GIS, this aviation milestone reinforces GAIA’s position as a vital hub for regional and international travel while strengthening the country’s economy and tourism product.
