Authorities seize 8.02 kilograms of cannabis resin in St Lucia Post Office drug bust
CASTRIES, St Lucia — A General Post Office (GPO) employee and another suspect are facing multiple charges after authorities intercepted a high-value shipment of cannabis resin hidden in packages declared as food items, in what police are calling a major St Lucia Post Office drug bust.
The GPO worker was arrested on Wednesday, and the second suspect was taken into custody two days later during a police operation in Millet, where officers also seized electronic equipment. The arrests followed a coordinated investigation by the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force’s (RSLPF) Gangs, Narcotics and Firearms Unit and the Customs and Excise Department.
According to police, the operation began last Tuesday when officers flagged a suspicious package at the Castries GPO. The parcel, originating from the United States, was declared as food items but was found to contain 80 rectangular bricks of suspected cannabis resin, each marked “Made in California.”
Authorities reported that the drugs weighed 8.02 kilograms and carried an estimated street value of EC$320,800. The narcotics have been secured as evidence.
Police confirmed that charges are expected to include importation of controlled drugs under the Drug (Prevention of Misuse) Act, fraudulent evasion under Section 84 (2) Schedule 3 – Part 2 Paragraph 5, and goods improperly imported under the Customs Act Section 32 (1) (b), (d) and (f).
The RSLPF described the St Lucia Post Office drug bust as a significant disruption to the illegal drug trade and reiterated their commitment to dismantling narcotics trafficking networks across the island. This operation comes just weeks after another St Lucia drug trafficking crackdown that targeted multiple smuggling networks across the country.
Investigations remain active as authorities work to determine the full scope of the operation and whether other individuals are linked to the case.
