What Travelers Need to Know About the New 2025 Travel Requirements

As global travel gears up for significant changes in 2025, new Federal requirements are set to impact both domestic and international journeys. From stricter ID rules for flights to enhanced pre-screening systems for international destinations, travelers should prepare in advance. Here’s a breakdown of the key changes and how to navigate them.

REAL ID for Domestic Flights and Federal Facilities

With the May 7, 2025, deadline approaching, the REAL ID will soon be essential for boarding domestic flights and accessing secure federal facilities, including military bases and courthouses. This federally compliant identification is part of an effort to enhance security and streamline identity verification processes.

Passed by Congress in 2005 following a recommendation from the 9/11 Commission, the REAL ID Act establishes uniform standards for issuing identification, such as driver’s licenses. Implementation has been delayed multiple times, but U.S. residents now have less than a year to ensure their ID meets the Federal requirements.

What Is a REAL ID?

A REAL ID is a state-issued identification card or driver’s license that complies with federal security standards. It is identifiable by a star or specific marking on the upper portion of the card.

All U.S. states, the District of Columbia, and five U.S. territories currently issue REAL IDs. The process requires proof of identity, proof of residency, and a verified Social Security number. Some states have streamlined the process, allowing applicants to begin their application online before completing it at their local DMV.

How to Apply for a REAL ID

Travelers can apply for a REAL ID by visiting their local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) with:

  1. Proof of Identity: Examples include a valid passport or birth certificate.
  2. Proof of Residency: Utility bills or rental agreements are common options.
  3. Social Security Number: While physical documentation may no longer be required in some states, verification with the Social Security Administration is part of the process.

It’s advised to check your state DMV’s website for the latest application details and requirements. In states like California, completing part of the application online can significantly reduce the time spent at the DMV office.

What Does REAL ID Compliance Mean?

After May 7, 2025, travelers without a REAL ID-compliant card will need a valid passport or other federally accepted identification to board domestic flights or access federal facilities. For most people, obtaining a REAL ID is the simplest way to meet these requirements without additional inconvenience.

Applying early is strongly recommended to avoid last-minute delays, as DMVs are expected to experience long wait times closer to the deadline. By acting now, travelers can ensure uninterrupted access to flights and federal services.

Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) for the United Kingdom

Starting January 8, 2025, travelers heading to the United Kingdom will need to register for an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA). Modeled after the U.S. ESTA system, the ETA aims to improve border security while streamlining entry for visitors.

The ETA, which costs about $13, is valid for two years and allows multiple entries. While not a visa, it is a required pre-screening process for non-visa travelers. Applications can be completed online or via the UK government’s dedicated ETA app.

European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS)

In May 2025, the European Union will launch the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS). This new system requires U.S. travelers, who previously enjoyed visa-free entry, to apply for travel authorization before visiting participating countries.

The ETIAS allows stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period. Once approved, the authorization remains valid for up to three years or until the passport expires. The process involves submitting personal information and paying a small fee of approximately $7.

New Protections for Air Travelers

Recent changes to federal regulations have also introduced new consumer protections for air travelers. Airlines are now required to provide automatic refunds for flights canceled or significantly delayed. Delays are defined as three hours for domestic flights and six hours for international ones.

Additional refunds must also be issued for baggage delays exceeding 12 hours domestically (or 15–30 hours internationally) and for ancillary services, such as in-flight Wi-Fi, that are paid for but not delivered. Airlines must also provide 24/7 live customer service channels to assist passengers.

Key Takeaways for 2025 Travel

With these significant updates, preparation will be crucial for all travelers. Make sure your identification is REAL ID-compliant, familiarize yourself with new ETA and ETIAS requirements for international travel, and be aware of your rights as an air traveler under the updated regulations.
