CASTRIES, St Lucia — WASCO says Saint Lucia is facing one of its driest seasons on record, with critically low inflows affecting major water treatment systems and leaving some communities without a reliable supply for weeks.

The utility company warned that the Hill 20 system, which serves the Babonneau region, has been among the hardest hit as prolonged dry conditions continue to strain raw water sources across the island.
In a public update posted this week, WASCO shared images of the Marquis intake, a key raw water source supplying the Hill 20 Treatment Plant, showing visibly low water levels amid worsening drought conditions.
WASCO Dry Season Warning Raises Supply Concerns
According to WASCO, reduced inflows are impacting both northern and southern treatment plants, increasing pressure on the island’s water distribution network as demand remains high during the dry season.
The company said it has intensified water trucking operations and community valving efforts in affected areas to help ensure equitable access to water while shortages persist.
WASCO also stated that accelerated water quality testing is ongoing to maintain safety standards as supply conditions deteriorate.
The warning comes as the Meteorological Services forecasts below-normal rainfall into the hurricane season, conditions WASCO said are being influenced by a developing El Niño weather pattern.
Dry Season Crisis Deepens Pressure on Hill 20
Residents served by the Hill 20 network have reported inconsistent water access for several weeks, with some households experiencing prolonged disruptions. The latest warning follows earlier concerns over what WASCO previously described as a bleak national water situation.
WASCO urged the public to conserve water where possible, safely store reserves, and avoid unnecessary usage as the island navigates the worsening dry spell.
The utility has not indicated when conditions are expected to improve, but said conservation efforts will remain critical if below-average rainfall continues in the coming months.
